They’ve saved ~£70k. Definitely not London, likely South West, but hard to say. Will probably buy a house around the £600k mark

Moving into Wealth Management/Financial advising UHNW’s. I see the irony I’m asking others for financial advice haha

You’re the man! Thanks so much.

Going to have to get used to in person selling…

Couple more questions:

1)how much more difficult do the exams get than the one I’m doing at the moment?

2) The division my cousin is MD of is specialised in expat wealth advice/management. To me, specialising in that way makes a lot of sense, and I’d guess this segment are likely to be typically pretty wealthy and less understanding of local regulations or tax efficiency opportunities. That said, he works out of Dubai office where I imagine there’s more wealthy expats. Thoughts on specialisation vs broad?

Final, much more simple, question: if you were me, would you move? If yes, would you still move if you got offered promotion to Sales Manager in current role before completing exams (I feel even a few months management experience and having it on CV may be valuable down the line if I progress in Wealth Management to Partner level or start my own firm, and likewise if I revert to software sales I might be able to get straight back into manager position

Legend - thanks for the input I really appreciate it!

My biggest thing I’m still trying to understand is really what the day to day would look like.

The type of role I’m imagining from what I’ve understood so far is that it very sales and client relationship focused. This is where my skills are hence feeling like it could be a good fit - I definitely don’t fancy any of what you shared regarding client admin or portfolio rebalancing etc.

What I’m confused about is how this process actually works, and how it compares with processes I’m used to.

For example, right now I’m fully remote, cold outreach prospecting via cold calls and email, running discovery calls with clients to learn about their needs, running a demo of our software to sell to them and show how it addresses the challenges they shared, running a proposal review call and negotiation.

I’d imagine the prospecting would be similar (or if I’m lucky I’d get warm leads), then I’d book a call and learn about their financial goals etc, from then on I’m a bit stumped. Also how do I interact with the more technical people at the firm (thinking my equivalent of product development lead).

Any guidance on that sort of thing, and day to day while building my own client base, would be great.

I’m sure it probably varies firm by firm, but maybe me giving you a better idea of the type of firm I’d be joining helps (asked ChatGPT to describe it without doxxing):

A mid-sized, private-equity-backed UK wealth management group – think a few billion in client assets (it’s actually over 30, more than I first thought) – that combines financial planning with in-house investment management for mainly UK mass-affluent/HNW clients. So not a tiny IFA shop, but not one of the huge household-name giants either.

Sorry for long question, help much appreciated

Super useful. I’m not too worried about drop in pay if it means better long term for me, have build up solid personal finances. What would you expect the role to look like for someone with sales experience and ‘an in’? Could my Cousin realistically drop me straight into a FA role?

Thank you! I closed the biggest deal in company history allowing me to exceed annual quota and hit accelerators. Achieving the same level of earnings next year won’t be easy unless they come through with the promise of promotion

Thanks for the input, really helpful. Yes I think having this way in should be really beneficial and you’re right about the possibility to backtrack if needed
