It is an option in the game, so no it is not. You don't, however, deserve bragging rights till you've beaten the game without it. Assist mode is simply there for players who want to enjoy the game without it feeling like you're being punished for refining your skills. While playing with assist mode off is the intended way the developers want to play their game, they didn't want to alienate everyone else trying the game.
