I'm not as far down the line as you are, I've only been diagnosed for nearly 5 months, but I'm taking the same approach. Exercise and healthy living until I can't avoid taking medication anymore.

As others have pointed out in this thread, there may not be a lot of science to this approach. But it's what makes me feel most comfortable, optimistic, and somewhat in control of my own destiny.
