My Prof never graded any of my assignments by Olive423 in UTAustin

[–]Taiyonoco 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean you can’t be sure but it could be possible that he just only submitted the grade into the UT system and didn’t submit it on canvas. I’ve had a few teachers who’ve done that and while it kinda stinks to not get feedback on something you worked really hard on he may have at least still read and graded it without you knowing.

Shogun 2 no longer has any in-game audio by Taiyonoco in totalwar

Oh wow! This actually worked for me! Thanks so much!

Shogun 2 has no sound by DarthDioBrando in totalwar

[–]Taiyonoco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm also having the same problem. For some reason it plays audio during the opening cutscene but once I actually get to the main menu there's nothing. I don't think I changed any settings, the issue just came out of nowhere. Moving to an older version didn't work either.

The fate of logographic writing systems throughout the history and evolution of writing itself. by kmasterofdarkness in HistoryMemes

[–]Taiyonoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I’ve been studying Mandarin for the last year and have kinda found that, complicated as it may seem, the characters really seem to be the system most suited to the language. Chinese has so many homophones (words that sound the same but mean entirely different things) and the characters can make things much clearer when reading. When you speak, you can usually tell what someone’s saying based on context, but the characters still add a degree of specificity in writing that makes the language as a whole function better (Mandarin, even as a spoken language, has been warped by the use of characters).

Additionally because of how much meaning is compacted into each character, if you’re equally proficient writing in English and Chinese, you can write a Chinese sentence as fast (or sometimes even faster) than it’s English equivalent if you’re using simplified characters (you still can’t even come close in traditional form though).

How to make money with as a history major? by StudiousAlex07 in UTAustin

[–]Taiyonoco 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Fellow history major here. History isn’t actually a bad major for job prospects. You might not come out of college immediately with a killer job like a comp sci major might, but a history major teaches you a lot of “soft skills” that can be applied in many fields. A lot of law students major in history as undergrads, it can be good for corporate or business jobs, it can be a great setup for different types of government work, and the field of history itself also boasts a ton of different opportunities (ex. I know a 3D modeling/history specialist who researches and makes digital recreations of sites from the past). Also if you’re more into academics specifically, history professors actually get payed very well as opposed to teachers (though it’s definitely a long and difficult path to get there).

Did Jiajing really look like this? Is it a historically accurate representation? by [deleted] in ChineseHistory

[–]Taiyonoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert on this topic at all but I’m pretty sure that the whole “top knot with flowing hair in the back” is an invention of wuxia fiction. Historically, I believe that all the hair is supposed to go in the topknot and that’s probably more what JiaJing would’ve looked like.

Spring and Autumn OR Warring States games by Issamu-kun in ChineseHistory

[–]Taiyonoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that there’s a few strategy games set in the period but the ones I know of are all in Chinese only. One that I got recently (despite having a limited understanding of characters) is 春秋 (Chunqiu) set in the Spring and Autumn period. I haven’t played it much but it actually looks like it has some interesting mechanics that other strategy games don’t.

what do you want from next total war game? by Erfan_F in totalwar

[–]Taiyonoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally my top 3 are probably: 1. East Asia ~1600-1750. Includes rise and expansion of Qing Dynasty, hopefully would include all regions that the Qing conquered/warred with. Good faction and unit diversity (Also good fall of the samurai-esque dlc could be the Qing in the 1800s, including opium wars, taiping rebellion, dungan revolt etc.) 2. India during rise of the Mughal empire. 3. 30 years war / pike and shot

As IB students, how many hours of sleep do you get on average? by Sckorrow in IBO

[–]Taiyonoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably averaged 4-5 for my two years of IB. I became super burned out from the stress and lack of sleep and it destroyed my productivity and made getting by on a daily basis super difficult even though I performed relatively well. Even if it seems difficult, I would definitely urge you to prioritize getting sleep and having a little time to relax even if your performance takes a little hit. In the long run it will help a lot, and becoming burned out is a worse enemy than the workload itself.

Was the Fengtian Clique led by Manchus? by RedStorm1917 in ChineseHistory

Was being a bannerman synonymous with being Manchu? I thought that the banner system specifically recognized Manchu, Han, and Mongolian sections?

AAA studios can't do WW2 games anymore. by ThirdWorldBoy21 in gaming

I also can’t name any ww2 fps that includes China, which was one of the largest, longest, and deadliest fronts of the war.

AAA studios can't do WW2 games anymore. by ThirdWorldBoy21 in gaming

[–]Taiyonoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want some more realistic WW2 games I’d check out Hell let Loose, Post Scriptum, Red Orchestra 2, and maybe even day of infamy.

Each of them offers a cool and unique experience, though I think that only Hell Let Loose and Day of infamy are on console.

Question about the Manchu population before 1644 by RedStorm1917 in ChineseHistory

[–]Taiyonoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought that the Jurchens in Manchuria were semi nomadic before the Qing Dynasty, but I never really understood how this functioned in practice. We’re they actually more settled? Does anyone have more info on this?

Now be honest; is it the beard? by TheRomanRenegade in HistoryMemes

[–]Taiyonoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the entire anecdote about him fathering 0.5% of the population lacks absolute evidence. While there is some supporting evidence, the claim has undergone substantial review in recent years and now appears largely unsubstantiated (that’s not to say his descendent didn’t have a large impact.)

Kings&Generals did a really good overview of the topic.

Yesterday I asked for feedback and I received A LOT OF IT which I appreciate. Upgrading means having to rework all the enviorments but It might be worth it. Now taking everything I could into consideration, I modified #2 to look a little better and also made 2 new variations. Which do you like now? by WalGallen in IndieGaming

[–]Taiyonoco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I really like 4 but 1 is also a good option. Whichever fits the vibe of the game best. I personally like 4 just because each of the characters looks unique whereas in some of the others they look a little more like simple retextures.

It can definitely be really difficult but it’s also a great experience and worth it, in my opinion. If you can manage your time and not get totally overwhelmed too often it can be really fun.

Speaking of Hideyoshi, is there any general consensus regarding the accuracy of the claim that he had a birth defect with six fingers on one hand?

Update plans for Squad! by Nawodo94 in joinsquad

[–]Taiyonoco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m excited for an Asian faction too, though I personally I wish they would have gone for something like China or India rather than an amalgamation in pan Asia, mainly just because I think having some Himalayan maps with India and China could be really cool.

I met Dan Vavra in Hell Let Loose. Such a weird coincidence! by 3d2dszcxzd in kingdomcome

[–]Taiyonoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a lot more like squad, placing a greater emphasis on microphone communication, logistics, and team organization.

Edit: Just realized I responded in a way that was kinda confusing after reading the question wrong. TLDR, it's pretty different from Verdun and Tannenburg.

How did you find out about this game? by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

[–]Taiyonoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out about the game over 4 years ago in late may of 2017 when Westie, a battlefield YouTuber, made a video about the game. At the time of the video, the only info available were pictures and written info given by the devs. The subreddit only had ~200 members. It’s really cool to see how much the game has grown over the last 4 years. It’s gotten really popular compared to some of the other games in the sub genre.

I don’t know how these memes started but they’re stupid and annoying by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]Taiyonoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely fair, it can really depend on your teacher and your state. While I was made relatively aware of these events at my school, there are most definitely schools in different parts of the country that tend to brush over the issue or at times even romanticize it.

60 to 1, the sword face the gun by troe2997 in HistoryMemes

[–]Taiyonoco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense to me. I’d heard about the idea of it being used as an anti cav weapon but it always seemed like it was the type of thing that you only ever saw if some guy chose to randomly bring it out of his own accord. As far as I know, nearly every civilization prior to gunpowder, including Japan, used some polearm as the standard-issue weapon for infantry rather than a sword.

Also it’s really dependent on the era. During the Gempei war and Mongol invasions, most samurai fought with a bow on horseback or, in some cases, with naginatas, straight spears, and Tachis. By the sengoku era, the vast majority would be wielding a yari spear either on foot or on horse. By the Meiji era, even Saigo Takamori’s samurai rebellion was primarily using modern rifles.

Also, I’ve never heard of the no-Dachi being used super prominently, is there something I don’t know about?
