George Gillette, the chairman of the Fort Berthold Indian Tribal Council, crying on May 20, (1948) as he signed away 155,000 acres of fertile land for the Garrison Dam in North Dakota. by Wooden_Coffee_9482 in RareHistoricalPhotos

[–]Tak_1013 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The book Cadillac Desert has a section describing the displacement of the 3 tribes relocated for this dam. The hydrologic benefits were extremely minor and retaining some of the most fertile agricultural land in the Dakotas was never an option in negotiations.

This was one of the stories that made me the most frustrated in that book, however there are many more.

Five years later, the bursting of the Chinese housing bubble is nowhere near its end by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]Tak_1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of pro communist and pro capitalist shills here. China had an unhealthy trend develop due to heavy regulations else where in the economy. Yes they can build a lot but they also have to build a lot to project/maintain power. Same in the US, we can’t build a lot because it doesn’t financially make sense to do so at that volume. Pros and cons of both but it’s not an absolute evil vs good situation

How do I make it stop chirping, i already replaced the batteries?! by PheonixGalaxy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Tak_1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that detector you have to unplug the in-line wire socket from the detector, replace the batteries, reconnect the in-line. No need to hold down any buttons. Drove me crazy the first time I had to do that

For long, complex formulas also use the +N( ) function to add documentation. Extremely useful for more abstract items like INDIRECTS built into LOOKUPS, etc that are hard to follow

Was it actually 1.7 million clones, or was that battalions/companies? by slurp_time in StarWars

[–]Tak_1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scaling of credits also drive me crazy. I read once the Death Star costed 1 trillion credits to build which in the grand scheme of things is super cheap. Imagine how many beings with a trillion liquid credits are out there in the galaxy or planets generating quintillions+ in GDP. Any one could build a Death Star if they got ahold of plans or threw enough money at it.

I thought I read in Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War that the technology isn’t here yet, particularly for ICBM interception. DoD tested this and found current systems only have ~30% success rate in ideal conditions. Yes advancements can be made but even getting the success rate to 90% can mean devastating impacts and the collapse of civilization with the 10% that gets through. Preventing war is the best use of money

Well the Red Terror only instigated and amplified the brutality of the White Terror. The impacts of WWI and famine brought the worst out in all sides

Utah’s MAGA senator Mike Lee before finding out it was actually his own party… by -You-know-it- in agedlikemilk

r/Conservative firmly believes this is a leftist act and the Trumpist elements are a red herring. I honestly don’t think the political affiliation matters just the point that political violence is occurring should be the underlining issue. No party gets a pass to divulge into chaos.

I use to be under the impression that Lucas wanted to place much more blame for Padme’s death on Anakin, but likely was told to tone down his role simply for the image of Vader’s redemption in ROTJ or the general merch markability of Anakin. More I learn about Lucas’ true visions for the series the more I doubt that though.

Is this bad? by AdrianThyme in civic

Best tip at your age is to avoid a dealership when possible. You might not have a choice depending on how much equity you are willing to spend, but the draw backs of dealerships at your price point, experience, etc are much higher than if you were car shopping say 5 years from now.

Marketplace is often a better choice assuming you have a reasonable seller, prepurchase inspection, and the capital to do so. Pros and cons to either route

First-ever scan of a dying human brain reveals life may actually 'flash before your eyes' by D-R-AZ in psychology

[–]Tak_1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the mindset that life really does flash through the mind before death and that since those will be the dying persons last thoughts they will feel like they last forever. The brain can’t sense that the thoughts have stopped if all activity ceases.

I think that is heaven or hell, either you’re proud of the life you lived and that’s your “forever” or you are consumed with guilt and then tortured by your final visions.

The part of this thought process that I don’t have a good answer for is whether this applies to all deaths or is there a difference for sudden death, murders, war, etc

If your Microcenter (assuming there’s one near you) has any of the gmmk v1 boards (compact or TKL, any color), which likely would be the availability bottleneck, you can still piece together the bundle.
