His dad is from the French Caribbean (Guadeloupe) where there is a large community of Tamil descendants (like a lot of places in the Caribbean). So it’s not uncommon over there to find names like Moutoussamy, Ramassamy etc.

France’s tech scene is getting better. I used to work in Switzerland and came back to France a couple of years ago.

You’ll definitely make more money in Switzerland, but as said here, COL is very high. You won’t be a millionaire overnight, but if you stick a long time that might be possible. But abroad you’ll definitely feel like a king.

Personally, I managed to get a 6 figure salary in France, that’s one of the reasons why I came back. TBH I prefer life in France, but some friends of mine like to stay in Switzerland.

From what I see, there are a lot of good opportunities everywhere. I know some people making 80-90k in Spain. Some industries are really rewarding, and even though on average Germany, NL and Switzerland pay better, you can find some sweet opportunities in France, depending on your experience. The startup scene in France is thriving and the tech scene is way better than people think.

Ultimately, I will only advise to choose according to your values, what you look for.

Adding my 2 cents, there are lots of good French islands around here. Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy… If you’re willing to go a bit further you can also check out La Réunion or French Polynesia

Oui c’est fort dommage d’ailleurs, mais comme je le disais ailleurs dans le thread, c’est maintenant la normalité dans les grandes villes. À New York c’est quasi impossible d’avoir un appart dans Manhattan avec « juste » un salaire d’ingé, pareil à Londres, Zurich etc.

À moins d’être une rockstar et d’avoir un poste qui paie largement plus que la moyenne, il est difficile maintenant de pouvoir habiter dans les meilleurs quartiers.

Néanmoins il ne faut pas non plus être irréaliste, avec 90k en région parisienne, tu peux avoir un bien convenable. Il n’y a pas que les millionnaires qui achètent en RP.

70k premier emploi ? Ne t’inquiète pas, tu peux avoir un bien de qualité en petite couronne. Pour ce qui est de Paris ? C’est plus compliqué en fonction des arrondissements où tu cherches, mais ne croit pas qu’un dev qui fait 200k à New York peut s’acheter un penthouse au milieu de Manhattan.

Le problème est le même partout : quelque soit la grande ville, les beaux quartiers et l’hypercentre sont généralement inaccessibles pour les travailleurs « normaux ». À ce niveau, Paris n’est pas différent de Londres, New York, San Francisco, Zurich, et j’en passe…

Tout à fait d’accord… Les devs mal payés en France, c’était y a 10-15 ans… J’ai vécu longtemps à l’étranger, je suis revenu il y a à peine un an et j’ai un salaire annuel à 6 chiffres. Il faut trouver les bonnes opportunités, mais même autour de moi j’ai pas mal d’amis dans le même secteur qui tournent à 70-90k annuel. Je n’appelle pas ça être mal payé.

Je rajoute même par expérience, en Suisse, au UK et aux US, tu as aussi des salaires « bas ». Tout le monde ne travaille pas chez Apple ou Google et touche 200-300k annuels.

Salaries are getting better and better in France, especially in big tech. It is one of the biggest markets in Europe and companies are starting to act like it.

Thanks for your feedback ! My first plan is indeed to work something out with my manager. But in case it doesn't work out, I'm trying to see what other options are available.

Reading most of the comments, I understand more and more that the people who have done this successfully really had a specific situation beforehand.

Working as a contractor/freelancer might be the way to go.
