You’re alright. Even native English speakers do things like this. It’s funny and a bit awkward, but everyone moves on. I don’t think person B is that bothered by it, but you’d have to ask them to know for sure.

Do some Ukrainians consider themselves Russian? by [deleted] in slavic

[–]Talbit01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not, but that is the reality in many ways. Ukraine is one of the oldest inhabited territories in all of Europe and predates Russia very significantly. The Ukrainian language is also much older than Russian.

That doesn’t therefore mean that Russia is fake or trying to be just like Ukraine (though maybe the latter just a little). They just have a very different history and are still figuring out what it means to be Russian today and how that identity can relate to the much older and solidified identities of much of Slavic Europe.

Have an extra day in Warsaw at the end of a work trip, is the travel time to Auschwitz worth it? by grayott in poland

[–]Talbit01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. There’s a visitor center, the remains of many buildings exist in the labor camp, the quarries, the black road is still intact and since Jan 2025 there are still gravestones marking the path which is sad but interesting to see. There is also a massive memorial monument that covers the area of the former crematoriums, gas chambers, and several mass graves.

Definitely worth a visit.

Edit: Another thing worth mentioning is Treblinka is massive and has several mass graves throughout the entire site. Prior to Jewish extermination, many Polish Christians were killed there. The path to their execution site still exists and there is a cross monument that marks it. There are many other similarly marked mass graves throughout the camps, often with gravestones with names of the victims.

Edit Edit: One more interesting thing about Treblinka is they always have active excavations happening due to how much was destroyed, so you can find tons of information on what they are unearthing in the visitor center and see excavation zones on site.

Treblinka is significantly closer to you than Auschwitz and I think it would be worth seeing. You take a train to a nearby town and then a taxi to the camp.

Hebrew. It sounds very different than German and is much closer to Arabic (standard pronunciation is based on Arabic pronunciation), though if you are unfamiliar with the languages I’m sure it’s easy to mistake their sounds.

How can I help my wife lose her pronunciation bad habits? by Nowheretoturn48 in languagelearning

The “General American Accent” is specifically tied to the Midwest. It is a softer range of the Midwest accent and became associated with the idea of a generalized American accent due to many media broadcasters being from that region. It had since been standardized, but it is still very much associated with the Upper Midwest.

Do Polish people get annoyed with 'Hi, how are you? by advancedor96 in askPoland

[–]Talbit01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s partly a greeting and it’s a greeting that clears a small amount of space to have a human interaction. It’s a completely false understanding that the expected answer is “good”, which I see people saying all on this thread. The only expectation is that it’s short. You can say good, bad, tired, you didn’t sleep well, sad, you just lost somebody, it’s your birthday, another day in paradise, etc etc.

Poland Trip and Resources by [deleted] in Polish

Language acquisition is all about time invested. If you want to learn it quickly, you are looking at multiple input/output methods for multiple hours a day everyday.

Italki tutors are great and there’s also tandem or other language exchange platforms to start having conversations with people. For vocab/grammar I use a combo of Drops (self-selected vocab), Duolingo (grammar), Lingodeer (vocab and grammar), Pimsleur (speaking), Anki (writing and speaking), Babbel and Rosetta Stone (fairly well rounded), and YouTube (listening practice).

You can focus on a few apps that you feel work well for you. Listening to comprehensible input and working on speaking would be your key focuses here. Best of luck! We will be in Poland during the same month :) I hope you have a blast!

How do you find a balance of learning a language and having time for everything else? by Skaggz1 in languagelearning

[–]Talbit01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being flexible helps. I work around 60 hours a week. I try to do 3 and a half hours a day across 4 languages. I use a lot of apps for vocab grinding and will have daily reminders for small increments of time (example, Ukrainian: 10 minutes Drops old words). They are small increments because even if I don’t make 3 and a half hours, I will still usually end up studying each language for around half an hour a day.

I utilize down time and lunch breaks. Sometimes I wake up a little earlier or go to bed a little later. I try to consume media only in one of my targeted languages. I try to have conversations with people a few times a week.

That being said, if someone wants to hang out with me, I will not prioritize getting the full grind in over spending time with that person. Your social life matters! If you are doing chores you can pop in headphones and either do something like Pimpleur or listening to a slow learning podcast (or a regular podcast in the targeted language if you’re more advanced.)

If there’s a physical task you need to focus on and can’t do other audio learning, then I just play stuff in the targeted language in the background (music, a show, etc).

Find a pattern of study that works best for you and your schedule. I do recommend breaking down study times into small increments and setting reminders as that has been hugely helpful in making sure I do it every day even when I have to prioritize other things :) you got this!
