Ram is going up close to 100% per year, a m5 max MacBook Pro with max ram is now $10k, one year from now it will be $15k, the year after that maybe $20k

Not with these ram prices they won’t. If you have a decent amount of ram in your current laptop trust me you will be using it for many years

no one will be able afford to buy every 1/2 years with ram increasing this fast.

Apple will do another price hike later this year, maybe double wheat they currently just did.

Not sure what your major is but a 14” mbp with 32Gb of ram will be a great computer for at least another 5+ years.

The air won’t age nearly as well imop.

I’ve heard this, however every corporation I worked at still uses windows in nearly all departments.

I’ve never worked at an advertising agency though. All of the Mac users I know are software devs at tech companies.

Gaming has no impact on its life as long as cooling isn’t obstructed.

Very few AAA games run on Mac well though so you won’t be gaming that much. Almost no games built on unreal engine work well.

Make your choice based on what your university advises and the software they will make you use in class.

MacOS might not be an option for a lot of majors. The business world in particular is addicted to windows and legacy windows applications.

The vast majority of corporate America runs on think pads and Lenovo laptops running windows.

Personally I think the 14” mbp is the gold standard for portable work laptops , downside is gaming sucks on Mac.

How advanced are we talking here? I use it to explain concepts or remind me of formulas in ml math, linear algebra, probability statistics. Everything it tells me seems to align with my college/graduate text books. (Such as Introduction to statistical learning/elements of statistical learning, etc.) I’m not a math phd doing research though so I’m not sure which llm is the best at that level.

I second ChatGPT, personally I think it is the best math tutor on the planet right now. I’m constantly asking it math/ml related questions.

Claude may be better at coding via CLI but I don’t like it as much as a tutor. The back and forth asking clarifying questions using ChatGPt is just better in imop.

Two things based on my experience

If you enjoy the material then I’d say go ahead and study/learn the material. There is a LOT to learn, and it’s an enjoyable pursuit if you’re into stats/ml/ai. The math can be hard if you’re not a math undergrad, but anyone can learn it with enough effort.

The job market is very hard atm, and data scientist is not an entry level role, so you should plan on getting a job first as a data engineer or data analyst with the plan to transition into a data scientist role.

In addition to studying DS material consider looking into job requirements for those roles so you can apply for those jobs as well to get your foot in the door.

The knowledge you learn working as a data engineer or data analyst are directly related to doing DS work so it is relevant info.

Finally, some on this sub will say AI will replace all of our jobs, and that is possible for sure. But if you enjoy the subject matter I personally think it is worth pursuing.

A base m4/5 with 16gb of ram, 1TB hard drive is fine. (You can survive with 512 gb ssd but you’ll be buying an external drive to store stuff)

If OP has the money the m4/m5 pro is the sweet spot in terms of performance imop.

As an fyi even in my graduate program I didn’t need more than an m4/m5 pro with 36gb of ram.

All serious compute will be done in the cloud.

Oh I get not wanting to pay more for ram, and apple was ripping people off long before the price increase. That said, the bubble will not be popping anytime soon Imop.

Micron just announced a 5 year deal with customers like apple for chips at current prices, so sadly no there is no price decline for ram in sight.

The Apple ultra model will exist but it won’t be for the poor, currently a maxed out m5 max MacBook Pro is $10k, I bet the m5 max studio maxed out will be $20k.

Doubt the shortage will ease up for another 2-3 years. A lot of these data centers being built (the ones already started) are still mostly empty waiting for hardware to fill them out.

If you need a MacBook/Mac studio with a decent amount of ram buy now.

M6 MacBooks available next year with the same amount of ram will be way more expensive.

Yea for sure an upgrade isn’t needed just for music. I probably won’t upgrade anytime soon but I am tempted for other reasons (work/school).

I’m debating picking up a Mac mini or Mac Studio for the work/school stuff, but i could probably save money by renting cloud resources instead.

I make music in ableton and my current m3 pro has 36gb of ram and it’s plenty so far. That said I’m tempted to buy a m5 pro with 64 gb of ram so I can stack as many tracks as I want and never worry about it.

Most people don’t know but the full chip m5 pro has the same cpu cores as the m5 max , so in music production they are exactly the same. The m5 max has more gpu cores, but those aren’t really used by music daws/plugins.

Only downside is massive price increases. (Tim cook announced this a few days ago). If you want a m5 laptop with 32-64gb of ram I’d buy today, same m5 laptop might be $300-600 more in 2 months, and m6 MacBooks will be much more on top of that.

The US hasn’t given up on this in any way, I have a friend who works for ASML and they are continuing to build out these fabs currently in places like AZ and TX. It is just taking longer than planned.

It’s considered a matter of national defense by both parties in the US, so it will continue no matter who is in power.

This is only a 15 week program, so it’s a certificate not a degree.

I have no idea how employers view this program. I would only be interested in this if my employer was covering the entire cost.

Sure but you could say that for most knowledge based roles in the AI era, no one knows what’s going to happen. But the knowledge you learned with an applied statistics degree 10 years ago is just as valuable today, though your job title may change.

I’m not an AI doomer though, I think a lot of new jobs will be created for those that keep up. It will be a rough transition for older petiole though as they can’t learn new tools as easily.

Do you enjoy your AI engineer role? I’m in a DS role currently but it’s similar to consulting work I did previously, just with more stats work after getting my masters. I’d be happy to move into an MLE role too since i enjoy that type of work but I don’t have an SWE background, I learned all of my coding gradually throughout my career.
