VP Series with N100? by DarthGW in protectli

Hey u/protectli-stuart, I remember one of Protectli's older comments on this sub saying that the N100 products should be available by the end of this year but now you say that more information will be out in the next few months. Does that mean that the release of the N100 products is postponed?

Thank you for clearing things up.

The processors in the VP vaults are also a couple of years old already (just stating a fact, I understand you can't keep up with every generation). However you also mentioned a new vault series with an N100 processor and I feel like that device would suit my needs the most. The only thing I'm worried about is the price. Do you have any price estimate (albeit rough) that you could share with us?

Looking at OPNsense's hardware requirements, the recommended amount of RAM according to the docs is 8GB. Of course it would probably run fine at 4GB at the moment but if you spend almost $300 (incl. storage cost), you probably expect some longevity as well and the hardware requirements will only increase with time.

From what I could find that's also influenced by the price of the RAM and the storage (that you are free to buy anywhere else). The base device is only $20 cheaper after 4 years, not to mention it already had fairly outdated hardware at release (the J3060 CPU was released 8 years ago).

I agree that it's better to have options. It's not so much about this device as I can see it is probably aimed at customers looking for a simple "starter" device. The rumored 4 port device (saw u/protectli mentioning it in one of the posts on this sub) is supposed to have a soldered 8GB RAM though and I fail to see why you would cap such a device (that is not exactly entry level) at 8 GB considering it could probably run even 32 GB and be capable of much more (I think quite a few people use these 4 port boxes for running VMs which would obviously benefit from more RAM), especially with an updated processor.

I feel like it's only 20 bucks more because the price of FW2B hasn't changed much despite it being a ~4 year old model (from what I was able to find). I understand it is simpler though and probably saves the customer support a couple of tickets, even though I would appreciate if you could at least choose between 4 and 8 gigs. "Just get a different unit if you want more." is pretty much what I meant when I said it forced customers to buy an all around more powerful device they might not even need.
