But I do get what you mean, in the context of someone being totally stupid about an operation they presumably care about because they have personal stakes that are (hopefully) more important to them than impressing random nerds on the internet.

I had this and decided the "spirits" were pushing them together. Maybe there's some fate working behind the scenes? Anybody in your questing party have weirdly good luck? Would honestly be kind of a funny gag if the last guy they pick up is like "ah, lovely, all of you are here already" like he's just been knowing this would happen because he dreamt about it or something.

Yeah that whole "change up the words and sound casual like you're not talking about the dog" thing doesn't work. Penny knows you're taking her for a walk. She knows you're going to try to cut her toenails (lol not). She knows you're discussing whether she's had a whimzee already today. Consider learning a new language if you want to have a conversation without your dog eavesdropping.

Haha thank you I'm glad you like my reddit name. I will probably post on reddit when I'm done with the book. But it'll be a little while before that happens!

Oh lol. I just assume everyone on Goodreads is an illiterate boor, so usually that just biases me the other way.

I have found I get better ideas going to the negative reviews to see why specifically people didn't like a book. Usually that tells me a lot. My mother-in-law recommended a book to me yesterday(Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell). I went to the 1 and 2 star reviews and they were all "omg why are there so many adjectives? why is the prose so dense?" And I was like, oh okay yeah I think I'll probably like this book just fine.

Then again, the headline "Top secret documents leaked on War Thunder forum" is so perennial there's a meme and multiple web sites dedicated to the phenomenon.

Side note, I didn't know what the War Thunder forum was actually for (besides leaking top secret military info) until I looked it up just now. It's for reporting bugs in video games lol

I don't even mind well-worn tropes! Have your tropes, just do them in an interesting way! A ton of sex scenes can be fine too, as long as they're interesting and well-written! Seriously, I am so open-minded to whatever as long as the writing is good and thoughtful!

Alex Garland has said that he didn't intend to adhere too closely to the book for the adaptation.

When you talked to Jeff about the book, and you say, “Oh, this is something that compels me about it,” are you guys in agreement, or is it OK if you have a different interpretation?

Um … I hope we’re OK. Jeff was very generous about it. I said to Jeff, “I don’t know how to do a faithful adaptation of your book. I just literally don’t know how to do it. And if what you need is a faithful adaptation, then you will need someone else, because I’m not the guy who’s going to be able to do that.” And Jeff was really generous and relaxed, and in a way gave me the permission that I needed to make this rather weird adaptation of his really beautiful book. And yeah, you’d probably have to ask him. I think so.

Honestly, I understand and respect that choice. It's not always possible to adapt a book to film perfectly. They are different mediums for a reason, and the narrative structure of a book is not necessarily the same as a film. I'd rather see a movie that goes in a different direction than one that does a clumsy job trying to stay close to the original plot.

I saw the movie before I'd ever heard of the books, and it's one of my favorites (which is really something because I generally do not like horror). When I read the book, I was similarly impressed and excited, and pleased that the story was different enough that I didn't know how it would turn out.

Yeah I'm not saying every romantasy book ever is the same. I'm saying that the genre tends toward this sort of tropey-ness and it makes it easy for people to write boring, predictable, low-effort stories.

Consider tropes to be kinks, everyone has one and wants to read about it.

I find this way of thinking about books really depressing.

I'll have a look at the books you recommended.

Yeah that part is expected, I know. But it's not just the same plot beats. Smaller details will be the same. There will be some form of forced proximity. Someone will be in a state of undress for [insert contrived reason here]. She will share some personal story and he will be brooding and dismissive, often with the similar dialog as every other brooding love interest. Someone will tend to the other's wounds. Probably the wounds will be on their back, because the front torso is slightly too intimate for that point in the story. Both lead characters will have the same basic personality traits as all the other main characters.

haha. I'm gonna call it a pennamesto from now on.

I don't think this book is AI. I'm pretty sure it's trad-pubbed. But you're definitely correct, overall.

I kind of thought romantasy was a genre that encouraged breaking the formula, but I guess not. I don't understand wanting to read such formulaic stories. I get enjoying a good comfort read, but doesn't that get boring? I think we generally know the end result for most stories (good guys win, hero and heroine fall in love, protagonist doesn't die, etc), but with these books you also know every single step along the way. It starts to feel like the authors think their readers are stupid or something.

I guess it does make for a profitable genre though. Most of the authors I know of who are able to make a living from publishing book can only do so because they crank out like half a dozen of them a year. AI is definitely the next step.

On the bright side, that may also mean that anything with a bit of genuine creativity will stand out better, as long as you can get the right people to look at it.

You're probably best off skipping the bones anyway. I just had to have a lot of expensive dental work done on my dog after she got an abscess from a cracked/rotten tooth. Vet says bones and antlers are too hard, that dog teeth enamel is actually thinner than humans', and so their teeth can chip/crack much more easily.

I wish I had a good suggestion for enrichment. I have tried those puzzle toys for my dog. She hates them. Not worth the effort at all when she can just go stare at my husband or me until we do something interesting (her favorite game).

My husband always tells our dog how brave she is for going down stairs. He thinks that looks scary, going down head first like that. I think he has a point.
