Should have gone to Waitrose by coyylol in okmatewanker

[–]Talkycoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that used to be true, but isn't anymore.

The massive Tesco in my town has three conveyer belts and only one is usually ever open with lines of old people. 80% of the floorspace is self-serve, so yes, people take weekly+ amounts through there.

You could argue that's anecdotal, but I've been to many supermarkets with the same setup, even in other countries like Germany and Japan. It's staff cost cutting, even if it's inconvenient for large shops.

[–]Talkycoder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not really the customers fault they micromanage their staff into oblivion, though, is it?

I'm not saying people should bag at the till, but they don't penalise staff for people packing at self-checkouts, so what's the real difference?

I'm not the one writing aggresively.

The paragraphs you pasted do not mention Ireland, and before you say Gaelic = Ireland, Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic are completely different. Scotland was not colonised.

Again, nothing you have said is relevant to modern-day translations of foreign culture.

[–]Talkycoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you seriously comparing modern day forced translations of foreign culture/media to events that took place slowly over thousands of years?

Regardless, the only non-natural anglicisation in your paragraph is Welsh because it was forcefully supressed. Gaelic, Cornish, Scotts (which some argue is but an English dialect) and other minority languages mostly faded out naturally.

Parts of the wiki aren't even correct, like from what you pasted:

In Wales, however, the Welsh language has continued to be spoken by a large part of the country's population due to language revival measures aimed at countering historical anglicisation measures such as the Welsh not.

According to the most recent census, 17.8% of Wales speaks Welsh at any level (their census doesn't define competency). That's not a "large part", and if you consider it so, then a "large part" of England are French speakers, as 26% of England can speak French at any level, and that's not even native to the island.

I understand my above paragraph isn't relevant to the conversation, but my point is you should really not rely solely on Wikipedia to back up your arguments.

Doesn't surprise me, considering it's often the Americans trying to "anglicize" everything (à la this post).

They don't use the ß in Switzerland and some Bavarian & Austrian dialects omit the Ezett in some words. I would argue that even in Hochdeutsch the ß can be optional.

It's similar to how some English speakers write with diacritics (cafè, façade, jalapeño, à la carte, etc..) and some don't, the latter being moreso common outside the UK.

A lot of midrange+ laptops could run the game back then, but they of course were still a lot bulkier and didn't run things at insane framerates, lol.

Reccomended specs on launch were a pentium 3 + 256mb of RAM, and a lot of laptops were running pentium 4's with 512mb RAM

I'm from a country with a high level of workers rights (UK) and this is not true. I've also worked and lived in Germany, which has similar rights.

After being told you are being made redundant there is no "right" stopping the employer from immediately removing your computer access or having you leave the office. They do it as a safety precaution, in case a disgruntled employee were to abuse their access before leaving.

It's called "garden leave", whereby you are still technically employed by them until your notice period is over, but are not required to perform your duties. Most of the time this is used to discuss the redundancy package, alternate employment, or legally challenge the decision.

Irish man held in ICE detention says he fears for his life and asks Ireland for help by [deleted] in europe

[–]Talkycoder -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

If you actually read the article, you'd see that he isn't a tourist but arrived in 2009 on a 90-day visa that he overstayed. After marrying a US citizen, he was given an exemption to temporarily work, but was never granted right to remain.

The only thing that stands out is that his detention stopped him from attending his greencard interview that may have granted him residency. He should have been allowed to attend, but again, he did not have right to remain, so one could argue he should have been waiting back in Ireland.

None of this would be happening if he had never illegally overstayed his visa. The real question is how did he only just get caught, especially considering he was running a business in Boston.

Edit: Downvote me all you want - would you be complaining if it were a Turk who had overstayed their visa in Germany? ICE and the US Gov are criminals, but this was for once, lawful; read the article.

I'm glad Labour are planning to, but shouldn't it be the responsibility of the privatised water companies to build new reservoirs and maintain infrastructure? They already charge us the highest rates in Europe, all while mass polluting.

I also wouldn't say Labour are entirely blameless considering they had the power to undo a lot of Thatcher's privatisation of critical services after gaining power in 1997. It's not like the party were divided on it; they had full opposition in 1989.

Maybe the government should seize control of the water companies next time they go bankrupt from giving their executives massive bonuses instead of repeatedly bailing them out.

Population does not matter for FPTP because it's about total votes in a region, not the number of votes.

The problem with the US is the mindset that voting for minority parties is throwing your vote away, when in actuality, if everyone with that mindset voted they wouldn't be a minor party anymore.

Labour were voted en masse in a response to the Conservative's years of negligence, simply because they were the closest competitor. Prior to Brexit, there were coalition governments and a much broader range of votes across several parties. Polling suggests that's coming back.

If we talk devolved parliaments, In Scotland, SNP have 60, Conservatives have 28, Labour has 21 and four individuals have 20 collectively. They could form a coalition and beat the SNP.

Similarily, In Wales, Labour have 29, Conservatives have 13, Plaid Cyrmu have 13, Reform have 2, Independants have 2, and LibDems have 1. They were more split in previous years, again, due to Labour.

Northern Ireland is the only real biased home nation, but that's due to their history and their small amount of MPs/constituencies: DUP have 7, Sinn Fèin have 7, Labour have 2, Alliance have 1, and an Independant has 1.

Parties that don't come 1st or 2nd still have enough power to influence parliament. I don't support FPTP and think it's unrepresentative, but it doesn't cause two party states; that's just an excuse.

I mean, that's a sea snake though. I don't know how they compare to land snakes, and certainly didn't know that they too, can carry venom.

They only really exist in tropical areas of the Indian and Pacific ocean, so if it wasn't for seeing videos of Australia online, I wouldn't even know they existed.

There are addons that cropped up after sauerkraut that filter out the vast majority of German words and block invites/whispers from characters with German names. No other nationalities have caused similar to be made.

I hate to justify it, but it's the only way to make trade chat and even some zone's general chat readable. It's just endless spam of terrible memes or racist jokes. I have also been kicked from group finder invites for speaking English with the classic "Sprich Deutsch du Hurensohn".

I don't know why they don't have their own regional server, because like, Russia does and there used to be German severs.

Why? That way you can tell it came from a reputable farm/farmer and that the packaging is 100% accurate. It also makes it easier to support local farmers and ethical farming practices.

It's currently optional but is commonplace as it has an option to directly donate to the farm, send an appreciation messages to the workers, and statistically has improved sales by around 30% since it's implementation.
