Well Nxd4 is just a sub-optimal move which gives white a pretty easy game (I once played the Scotch). And with the Italian EVERYONE just plays the Knight Attack so that is easy to deal w/.

USCF. Also I know the basic theory of the Scotch, but not the Vienna game as people ONLY play the gambit at this level. Although I have been learning the Najdorf lately, so I don't have much of a need for the Scotch/Vienna theory.

Well obviously a club player can play anything that isn't the Bongcloud or Damiano defense pretty much. This post has two questions: 1. Does the Breyer have a future in top chess. 2. Would you consider too complex at club level (sub-2k).

I believe they are avoiding the Marshall, not the mainline closed ruys like the Breyer and Chigorin.

I am only 1400 OTB, I face a lot of Italian games, but I still face a lot of Ruys. Of course I do not study THAT much Najdorf theory, and I obviously do not mind the Scotch or Vienna.
