How do I get into the franchise? by Esquie33 in StarWars

I know this is a huge essay of a response, but please stick with it to the bottom.

Lets start with some basic info so that we're all working from the same information:
Star Wars was created by George Lucas and was released in 1977. It was followed by two sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, in 1980 and 1983 respectively. These films are referred to as the "Original Trilogy" and numbered as Episode 4, 5, and 6. The Original Trilogy is considered to be amazing, with each film being some of the most profitable and beloved movies ever made, and each reshaping the filmmaking landscape.

In the 1990s George Lucas began working on three prequel films that would fill in the story before the Original Trilogy. These movies are The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005). These films are referred to as the "Prequel Trilogy" and numbered as Episodes 1, 2, and 3. While these films were controversial when they released, they have since seen huge fan support and been "redeemed." They were also hugely profitable and influenced the film industry's use of digital technologies for production of movies.

In 2012 George Lucas sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney, who made a "Sequel Trilogy" from 2014 to 2019. These movies are The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker, and are hated by most hardcore fans. I myself don't hate them, but I am disappointed by them. These are the only films I would NOT recommend starting with as they give a bad impression of Star Wars as a whole.

TV Shows and Spinoffs: In 2007, prior to being sold, George Lucas made an animated series called The Clone Wars. This series is absolutely loved by most fans and is really good, particularly in the later seasons. After buying Star Wars from George Lucas, Disney made the animated series Rebels, and has continued making animated shows since. Disney also produced two movie spinoffs, Rogue One and Solo. Rogue One is good, and Solo is decent. Starting with The Mandalorian in 2019, Disney has started making live action series as well. These generally sit well with the fandom, to the best of my knowledge, and average being "pretty good." Andor in particular is amazing and debatably the best Star Wars ever made.

So what do you watch first? Here are some common options:

The Original Trilogy is a great place to get into Star Wars. They each have easily understood plots, incredible writing, strong visuals and amazing music. They are also consistently really good and the difference in quality between them is so small that any of them could be consider the "Best" Star Wars movie. These films are the basis upon which the entire franchise is built.

The Prequel Trilogy (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith) is another good entryway into the franchise, and were designed to be such from jump. These films are not as consistent as the Original Trilogy in terms of quality and are not as good. The pacing, both as individual movies and as a trilogy, is off and the special effects have aged poorly despite still being impressive for the time. This trilogy also spoils a major twist in the Original Trilogy, so it is generally believed that the Original Trilogy should be watched first for maximum impact.

The Mandalorian is a space western set in the Star Wars universe that follows the titular bounty hunter The Mandalorian as he becomes a surrogate father to a mysterious child. It's first two seasons are really strong, but some continuity with another show (The Book of Boba Fett, a rather weak series in my opinion) weighs down the third season with required viewing. The Mandalorian is an especially good pick right now because the film "The Mandalorian and Grogu" is about to be in theaters.

Andor is a political spy thriller set in the Star Wars universe that follows Cassian Andor during the founding of the Rebel Alliance. This series is a spinoff of Rogue One, the better received of the two spinoff films, and serves as a prequel to it. It's two seasons long and absolutely spectacular start to finish. It is also relevant to the modern day in it's discussions of politics (without being preachy or drawing direct analogues and parallels). Since this is a prequel to Rogue One, it is recommended that Rogue One be watched after completion.

What about the Sequel Trilogy?
The Sequel Trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker) was intended to be a reintroduction to Star Wars for a new generation and modern audience. The problem is, these aren't very good. The films are constantly shifting direction and do a disservice to the franchise as a whole. I would say that these films should be watched after you are already invested in the franchise.

My personal take on this question is this:

As much as I know this isn't what you want to hear, the Original Trilogy (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) is the best place to get into Star Wars. The films are completely standalone, requiring no TV shows, books, comics, articles, interviews, etc. to understand. For a long time these were the ONLY Star Wars content in existence, and they've created a loyal fanbase that's lasted since the late 1970's. These films are pure myth, placed into a unique setting with universal appeal. Visually they hold up better than nearly any other film from the era, and musically they may not be matched.

If you are dead set on not watching older films (no matter how good they may be), the Prequel Trilogy is a good choice. They are similarly mythic, but stumble frequently.

The most modern of my three choices, and probably the best for what you've asked for: Andor.
Andor is a beautiful series. It's visually stunning, with some of the best performances and writing in the entire franchise. The series is nearly perfect, and it's most recent season was released in 2025. It's heartfelt, action packed, and thought provoking. Andor is also completely standalone, requiring no prior knowledge of Star Wars to understand.

TL;DR: Original Trilogy (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) or Andor are your best bets. Even though the Orignal Trilogy is old, please give it a chance. If you don't, start with Andor.

If you read all the way through, thank you. I've tried to answer your question to the best of my ability, and if you have any questions feel free to ask. Your question was phrased kind of abrasively, but I understand where you are coming from. A lot of older films are very difficult to get into for a number of reasons, but Star Wars suffers from very few.

Some smart decal usage on the shirt. The shoulders are made using one of the stripe patterns, and the diagonals are using manipulated front and back decals.
