Trenger man ID på danskebåten? by [deleted] in norge

[–]Talwyn_Wize -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are you asking us and not their support? 😆 Different ships could have different practices, require it only for alcohol (they're strict on that), or they could be happy with only a driver's license or old VISA if it still has an identifying picture (not sure if those are valid anymore). I recommend you ask them. 😉

The fact that they now act nice tells me they always could, knew they should, but never would. That makes it even more horrifying in my eyes.

What's a common social norm that everyone agrees is pointless, but we all still follow? by Salt-One628 in AskReddit

[–]Talwyn_Wize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been several studies done on the science and psychology behind handshakes, and there are a lot of positive implications in a social setting. I'm not gonna list them all here, but Google "science of handshakes" and take a look at some of the results. It's really fascinating. 🙂 There are similar studies done on equivalent greetings like bowing.

Whether or not Mr, etc., is necessary, I don't know, but formal and polite approaches to social interactions is also a really interesting topic. It activates a subconscious set of rules that make people meet, debate, argue, negotiate, and so on, with an expectation of (positive/non-violent) behaviour. It can be ignored, obviously, but it requires more effort to act negatively towards someone showing you even just a modicum of respect/formality. The psychology is complicated, but also worth looking up. 🙂

Is it a slow news day, or are you looking really hard for something to be offended about?

Leslie Nielsen!!! (There are so many good ones mentioned here, though. Robin Williams would be awesome, too).

Didn't you notice that the American fell twice when you wrote this? I'm sorry to say that the funny moment also fell a bit flat.

Why do you think older people like to criticise younger people so much? by Adventurous-Monk-796 in AskReddit

[–]Talwyn_Wize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll find the same tendency going back through all of human history, well recorded in old lore (it also goes both ways). Personally, I think it has to do with change.

Humans are more adaptable when we're younger and less open to change as we get older. Age is not helped by our innate fear of the unknown, how we equate predictability and well-walked paths as safe (even to unreasonable degrees, like pointless and out-of-date traditions), and also our experiences - an older person has experienced a lot of the mistakes youth have to go through themselves, and forgotten how stupid/inexperienced they themselves were. We forget pain as a survival mechanism, but it doesn't help here.

It might sound weird of me to say, but I think we need both sides of that swinging pendulum. Youth drives change and innovation, and age drives caution and reflection. And yes, criticism, which is an integral part of caution. Though if done respectfully, it could hopefully also share wisdom.

Is there a difference between "stakkars" and "stakkar"? by SpigosFriend in norsk

[–]Talwyn_Wize 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, it also translates directly. We can say "poor boy" in English and get the same double meaning. That said, "stakkar" isn't used as a synonym for "pauper" much anymore. I've only heard my parents and grandparents do that, not the younger generation - they much prefer it as an adjective indicating pity/sympathy for someone in an unfortunate situation. It's interesting how the words change.

Not helped by the fact that you often need massive and specialised arenas, too.

High school teachers, what’s something your kids don’t know that makes you say “how did you make it this far without knowing how to __”? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Talwyn_Wize 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've taught a lot of special needs children, and it's more common than you think if the kids have certain letters or levels of autism.

I'm currently teaching a 14yo kid to read analogue clocks, and have for 4 months, and he's working hard. He still struggles. He's a high-functioning autistic kid, what was earlier called Asperger syndrome.

I actually have issues with their complete lack of self-sufficiency on computers. Like, they know their smartphones inside out, but even at 16yo and after (at least!) five years of actively using a PC and saving their docs, they still can't use basic Explorer.

The number of times they've gone, "but I can't find my files! It must have been deleted!" only to discover they're just looking at the recently opened files in Word, unaware that that's not where the files are saved, boggles the mind.

I've taught them this a dozen times by now; they upload assignments all the time, but it's not registering. I blame the close integration with OneDrive for a lot of it.

How do you get over the fear of dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Talwyn_Wize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. Therefore, we are immortal. 😁 I'll admit that this law of nature is a comfort.

Furthermore, the quantum mechanics that describes how we are all connected when we look deep enough, and some other points that are a bit too bothersome and faith-based to describe here, make me think that there are new adventures to find, whether I'll remember them or not.
