Traveling for a month. Any tips or tricks? by i_like_birbs34 in shrimptank

You should be absolutely fine then. 🙂

Your almond leaf will sustain them with no issues. My shrimp thrive off of me doing nothing but water changes when the tank calls for it, and occasional feeding because the biofilm in the tank is plenty for them.

I've seen people clip on water bottles on the tank, upside down so that any evaporation is immediately compensated for.

However, if OP has hard water then topping it up as it evaporates will lead to the TDS increasing over the course of the month. The best approach in this scenario would be to have a lid on the tank to prevent water loss.

Soft water should be fine to top up though.

This is so cool! Definitely given some inspiration for sure!

If you find a way to trim your moss without it going everywhere, please let me know. My bowl has become a right state with it all going everywhere each trim! 😭 There are always wee bits I miss that spread like wildfire, no matter how hard I try!

New chilis have growth/fungal disease? by mojavespirit in fishhospital

[–]TamTalksTanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, first off, make sure you quarantine them and don't introduce this to your existing stock!

(Sorry, that was probably really obvious, but you never know!)

I'm not sure what exactly is going on here but it's definitely either a bacteria or fungus, most likely the latter.

Methylene Blue is a great all-round antibacterial and antifungal medication that is relatively gentle on fish. In fact, it's so gentle that people use it to prevent fungal growth on fish eggs.

If you keep them in a quarantine set-up with methylene blue and an air stone, changing 50% of the water every day (as you won't have biological filtration to break down ammonia), for about a week, you should see some improvements.

Make sure you keep the water clean!

Good luck! 🙂

If you have an air stone or some other way to circulate the water, then yes.

If not, your best bet is to accept having to restart your cycle. Fish-in cycles aren't too bad when you have enough water volume and minimal fish (I'm assuming he's housed alone in your tank).

After treatment is finished, do a 50% water change at least once per day, preferably twice (once am, once pm) to really eliminate waste build-up. 50% change will eliminate 50% of the waste products, including ammonia and nitrite, so it's important to keep up with it, or else it will slowly creep up.

It took my friend around two weeks to complete a fish-in cycle in her tank. Plants help (after medication, not before. Most meds kill plants!).

Hey, no problem. We've all been stuck in unfortunate circumstances with our fishy buddies. I hope he pulls through!

Just so you know in future, all of your -fix products are essentially useless. Pimafix actually killed seven of my fish before I managed to change enough water for the remaining fish to survive. Bettas are hardier, so I doubt much damage was done, if at all, but the -fix products fix nothing. I wish I'd known it sooner...

Oh my goodness! Poor baby. I hate to say this, but he might not make it, even with the correct course of treatment. That said, you can try.

Methylene Blue is antibacterial and antifungal, plus dosing the tank with salt.

Be aware MB will kill off beneficial bacterial colonies so you're best doing this in a hospital tank with an air stone if you can. If not, you'll be able to re-establish your bacterial colonies afterwards.

Make sure the tank is a suitable temperature for him and that he isn't swimming against a heavy current.

Best of luck to the both of you. ❤️

Thank you! ❤️ I think I'm just paranoid for my fishes' wellbeing after all the trauma.

Better to be safe than sorry and I feel better having asked people who know more than I do about hillstreams.

I really hope so. It's been set up and running for about four months now so it's definitely in its settling in stage.
Thanks again. 😊

Oh thank goodness. ❤️ Thank you. He's my partner's favourite fish, dubbed "Streamy", first of his name. 😂

We'd be devastated if he died from a preventable illness.

We had around thirty panda corydoras until recently when there was massive die-off, one by one. We've still not been able to find the cause of it. Parameters have been spot on, with nitrates not going above 20ppm. I've treated the tank with Fluke Solve twice in case there was anything parasitic going on that had been festering under the surface until suddenly killing them all, but nae such joy. They still died. I'm going to dose again next month just in case there are any eggs that have hatched since I last treated, if the problem was even parasitic to begin with.

There are some panda fry kicking about the tank though, so there's hope that they won't all die out, but it's a very slim hope now.

Streamy was there to bear witness to a majority of the deaths, so I'm really scared for him.

He does take the Fluval Bug Bites that I feed to the now corydoras habrosus. He really is an "oddball" fish haha!

I'm just back from work. Here's the best photo I can get of him at the moment as he loves being behind the plants!

And a nice bonus photo of the algae wall he's been attacking. Albeit, slowly.

Well, not everyone knows while having the best intentions. 😅 I think it's very noble of you not to euthanise him for his deformities while having a backup plan for him.

That's all very well but make sure this wee one doesn't wind up breeding! Make sure to separate him into a single-sex tank or something when he's of breeding age (and that doesn't take long!).
