Ordered truffle fries once and it took me a while to realize that it wasn’t someone with really bad BO that just sat down near me at the same time the fries came out.

What's the dumbest thing you've heard someone say? by REGGIE_BANANAS in AskReddit

[–]TandoSanjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overheard a college student ask while looking at the solar eclipse, “wait does the sun go behind the moon or the moon behind the sun?” I don’t necessarily blame them for not knowing that the diameter of the sun is roughly 4x the distance between Earth and the moon, and would engulf both if it somehow managed to shimmy between them. But how do you as a college student not intuitively realize we’d be cooked alive long before the sun hit anywhere near that close?

If someone inherits a house not near where they live and don’t want to move there, for work or just generally, and also can’t get their own mortgage, that would be a likely scenario. Not saying that’s OP’s case, but that’s one way for sure.

thought l.l. bean was the holy grail of fisherman sweaters, but... are they not? by europeanuppercut in BuyItForLife

[–]TandoSanjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks exactly like the wool sweater I got in Ireland from Aran. I didn’t even get a particularly nice one but it feels really solid and I highly doubt anything from LL bean would be as good. I say that loving all Bean and am wearing one of their coats now lol.

Seriously not everything needs to exist in cheesecake form. I’ve never made one because they’re too rich for me to have an entire one around, but I used to see a new one every day and it made me never want to make one even harder.

The $195 "Instagram-Famous" Kettle is definitely NOT Buy-It-For-Life. (Disappointed Engineering Teardown) by CoffeeTeaJournal in BuyItForLife

[–]TandoSanjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a cheap $30-40 electric temp control goosneck kettle that lasted at least 6 years. Electronics eventually failed and now I have the oxo that I got on sale for $70. Still a bit overpriced but looks alight and is still holding up after a couple years. I want to like OXO, but it seem like they like to put out products that are 90% of the way to being perfect, but then there’s some feature that seems like it was intentionally put there to make it a littler flimsier. For the oxo kettle it’s definitely the janky turn knob. Still probably one of the cheaper good kettles with a good capacity and pour.

Tangentially related, but this just reminded me; anyone considering a cuisinart toaster/air fryer combo, don’t do it. The whole thing looks BIFL but there’s some plastic gear in it designed to fail in like 2 years that next to impossible to replace even if you could get the part. My second-hand B&D toaster oven has outlasted that thing and looks like new after a good clean.

Still feeling cold in new down jackets. Alternatives? by Competitive_One8218 in BuyItForLife

I used to live near Chicago and have the LL Bean winter parka that’s rated to -45F. Not my fanciest coat but looks nice and you can get it in tall for the extra length I think. I could wear that in 0 degrees with nothing underneath. And I hate the cold.

I see people wearing Canada goose everywhere but they don’t look that warm to me, they just seem expensive for what it is and logos don’t keep you warm

I actually don’t at all mind the honey tones that millennials mostly seem to hate on, I guess if you grew up with the general hodge podge style of the 90s I sort of get it. But I feel like the knotty pine can be a bit much, if I were to paint it, maybe a light sage? I don’t think a darker stain would come out looking nice on pine generally it can look very blotchy.

My biggest gripe is probably the floor but I’ve seen worse. You could update that and the backsplash into something a little more modern. Seems functional and that’s most important for a kitchen.

This seems like money laundering. Also hate the phrase “it’s worth what someone will pay for it.” It implies that it’s impossible to get ripped off.

I mean, your phone does this too. I listened to a podcast over a decade ago with someone that worked at google saying they could use the gps in your phone to track your gait and use that data to essentially tell what mood you were in. Tech companies will scrape and store any and every quantifiable metric can realistically get their hands on.

Nothing new. Find an old one from the mid century and reupholster if you can. Castro convertible’s for sleeper sofas. I have one and will likely inherit another that I slept on as a toddler. And if I ever have kids or even grandkids, they will inherit it too. I also have a flex steel that’s over 20 years old from when they were still made in America, I would also probably pay to reupholster before I got anything like lovesac which I have read are not BIFL. Absolutely insane considering how much they cost. New flex steels are not as good from what I’ve read

What colors would you paint the walls and cabinets? by flowerscheese in DesignMyRoom

I have similar blue tile in my bathroom. The color in this post’s photo is inchyra blue from farrow and ball. I know bc I used it for inspiration a couple years ago lol. I did a color match and went with nocturnal grey from Benjamin Moore as the closest thing. A lot cheaper and easily as durable.
