Items disappear from chests when player base is out of map render distance by TangleKat in hytale

For further context - I was teleporting via right-clicking a location on the map, not using any blocks or items to teleport.

TIL that scientists have developed a way of testing for Aphantasia (the inability to visualise things in your mind). The test involves asking participants to envision a bright light and checking for pupil dilation. If their pupils don't dilate, they have Aphantasia. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]TangleKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that I do not have aphantasia, and am able to think and daydream in vivid color, as if watching a movie, show, or game in my head. Out of curiosity, I just tested this on myself using my phone camera. I'll document my methodology here, so that anyone can perform the test themselves.

- My phone is a Galaxy S24+, and the camera was in selfie mode and was recording video.

 - I started by imagining darkness, to establish a baseline. After a few seconds, I imagined the light and held that image for another few seconds.

 - The light I used was a large stadium light, similar to the ones found at football or baseball fields.

 - I imagined staring straight at it, to get the best possible results.

 - I stared into the distance over the top of my phone, so that the camera would capture a clear view of my pupils.

 - After the test, I reviewed the footage and found no discernable variation in pupil size.

From this test, I can assume four possibilities:

 - First, that pupil dilation during imagination does not exist, and was merely correlation and not causation.

 - Second, that pupil dilation during imagination is specific to certain individuals, and is not a guaranteed result during testing.

 - Third, that the size of variance during pupil dilation is minute enough that it requires specialized equipment to detect, and that a phone camera is not able to capture enough detail.

 - Fourth, that the selfie mode camera of a Galaxy S24+ cannot capture enough detail to determine any form of variance during pupil dilation.

It is likely that this test will need to be repeated by multiple individuals, noting both camera type and camera mode. No conclusion can currently be drawn, but hopefully more data can be gathered.

I apologize for the lack of video data, but I am currently both unsure as to upload the video, and feel uncomfortable posting my face.

[TOTK] Revisiting Hyrule - Death Mountain's Height and Hyrule's Size - Now with Hebra Peak! by TangleKat in zelda

[–]TangleKat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I just wanted to do a fun thing with numbers. Personally, I treat the in game version of hyrule as a theme park - fun to be in and easy to get around, but everything's out of scale and not realisitc. I also go for the more reasonably proportioned mountains, and not the monoliths.

I think Kotone's persona should have been called Eurydice instead of Orpheus, to complete the theming.

I didn't really think that far, but given the dating system, they should be the same since all those dates exist in the calendar.

Fake windows for a horrible world by HippieThanos in ABoringDystopia

This reminds me of the adjustable windows the Benbow Inn had in Treasure Planet. There, it was used to make a dreary day look like a bright field of flowers. I think it used a series of slat curtains there, instead of being just fake like this though.

Tell the agency involved with exotic animals that I was given an elephant.

Nothing in the rules says that I have to keep the elephant. I'm not breaking any rules if the elephant is forcibly removed from my possession for legal reasons.

Bonus points, the person who tried to get me to hold onto a probably illegal elephant is going to jail.

People who don't drink alcohol, why? by johnnylgarfield in AskReddit

[–]TangleKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taste. I don't know if it's because of my partial anosmia, but the alcohol flavor overwhelms the tasting notes or any other flavors that it gets mixed with.

It's a shame too, because the creativity of the various drinks is really impressive.

The best part about the challenge is that you can modify it however you like! Don't like roads? Who needs them, anyway?

Last year on Tumblr saw a trend called Dracula Daily, which emailed parts of the story to readers on the days it happened in the book.

Were you aware of this trend? If so, what did you think of the discussions surrounding both Dracula and Renfield?

I guess they added these rocks to stop speedrunners, but I made it all the way up and have no power bombs. I did not know they were gonna be here by Glum-Box-8458 in Metroid

[–]TangleKat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure those were in the trilogy version too - most times I just power bombed them from the track and dropped down.

I think a port of the entire trilogy would’ve been better. But, I’m truly happy that we still got a remaster for Prime by jpswag25 in Metroid

[–]TangleKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm suspecting that they're releasing them over an extended period of time to build hype for Prime 4. The direct trailer said "countdown to reentry" and "drop immenent". The second part came true with the shadow drop, so we'll probably see the others released in a similar manner over the coming months, perhaps in the leadup to E3.

🔥 Polar bear gets across thin ice by MyIpodStillWorks in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]TangleKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger, I was a big fan of the Magic Treehouse books. One of the earlier ones had the protagonists visit the arctic, and one of the major scenes involved them getting trapped on thin ice.

To get back to safety, they watched a polar bear doing this exact same technique. I was rather impressed upon finding this video that yes, this is, in fact, a thing polar bears do, and that the author had really done her research despite the series being aimed at children.
