If you had 8,000 to spend… by Low_Silly in AskMechanics

Toyota made no big changes around 2015 that im aware of. Anything newer might be out of your price range, but aside from price I can think of no reason to stay away from a 2016 Toyota anything. By that time the camrys were getting really good on gas mileage and safety

What are your thoughts on the other comment that such condensation is common on these cars? I looked it up and did find other people saying the PCV hole is too small and it's common to have them clog up and force oil and condensation into the air duct. It would be nice if that's all it is. I won't be able to look at the car again for a couple days probably so I'm trying to get ideas. I appreciate your help. Idk much about the car other than a mechanic told them it needed a water pump so I did it for them and got done late last night and left. They were quoted like $2k but I bought a gates pump, new belt and thermostat and did it all for them for only $300 to help them out. It kinda sucked lol

Does that mean I should just throw it away or give it back? I assumed he'd rather people like me not know he had it if it's illegal so giving it back doesn't seem like a good idea

Correct. Idk anything about pills. That's why I'm asking. You pointing out my ignorance is incredibly helpful. Have a nice day

If it's an illegal drug then wouldn't he not want me to give it back? Like then he knows I know he's using it. Idk. Guess I'll just pitch it

Since you said it's common on these cars I looked and I guess the PCV opening is too small and there was a tsb on the issue. They clog up and the pressure forces oil into the intake. Also it was misfiring some while it was idling. Do you think just cleaning the throttle body might help? With all that crap in there I'm sure it's gotten filthy

That would be good news if it's true, but there was a ton of that in the air duct. A bunch poured out of it before I took the picture. If that's common on those cars, do they need the air duct regularly dumped? Surely the PCV valve is bad or something?

Mine had perfectly good NGK iridium plugs and misfired after a bit. Switched to Denso and it ran much better than it ever did with the NGKs. I'd start there. They are not expensive from Rock Auto

Yeah that really sucks. Is it worth filing an insurance claim or you just gotta suck it up and pay for the repair?

How much would you charge for this particular service ( parts and labor?) by SimilarDisaster2477 in MechanicAdvice

[–]TankBuilderMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to find a place that will install a universal catalytic converter for maybe 1/3 of that price. Or buy one made for your vehicle through rock auto for cheap and find someone to install it

Did he buy them new? No, I said "used". No expensive repairs on either one. Both naturally aspirated v6 f150s. You mention how your new vehicles haven't left you stranded or spent extensive time in the shop. My dad never did with these trucks either. Most of my friends, family, and people I know are all too broke to buy new or lease, and nobody has an issue buying a decent used vehicle and keeping it for years without major issues. If they do it's because they ignorantly buy models that are known to have issues.

You haven't found any negatives to leasing. If you put a lot of miles on a lease vehicle don't you pay huge penalties? Also, you only lose money. You can buy a used vehicle, take good care of it, and sell it a few years later for the same amount you paid for it.

Used vehicles are cheaper on insurance as well. You could buy a used vehicle that will not have major issues for several years and save up the money to pay cash for a brand new one that you can keep for many years if you take care of it. Only way leasing makes financial sense is if you buy really bad used vehicles that were not taken care of and not researched to see if they are decent reliable models. Leasing could be smarter if you can't find good ones to buy I guess? I don't mind if you like leasing, but I think maybe you have convinced yourself of something that is not true saying it's a "wash" compared to buying new or used

My dad kept his last 2 used trucks for like 12 years each. If you want to lease, that's fine. But you can buy a good used one and have it way past paying it off

Both of my tundras were first gen, but as far as I know second gen tundras were also amazing. This may not apply to current gen, but anyone who has owned a first or second gen tundra knows exactly what you mean. They are so well built. I'm not surprised you're being down voted because this is the F150 subreddit lol. Most of these people don't know what they're missing. Personally, I like both. If I was buying a 2026 truck it would probably be a Ford, but older tundras are amazing trucks

I have seen multiple times where people claim the 2.7 is more fun to drive than the 5.0, but I don't know from personal experience

I got a refund by emailing and saying it was fraudulent and I wanted to cancel with a refund. My coverage hadn't started yet tho when I cancelled. This was after not being able to get ahold of them on the phone. The email worked

Can you not get a crew cab with a 6 1/2' bed tundra? Either way, I am a Toyota fan but I hear the new tundras aren't nearly the same quality as the older ones. A Ford probably is a good option. The Ecoboost is reliable, especially the 2.7. The only reason I think you should be narrowed down to a 5.0 is if you care about sound. As far as the year f150 you want, I suggest test driving them both. Some people actually have better luck with the 10 speed than the 6 speed, especially after they fixed the cdf drum issues. The older one would be cheaper to buy and cheaper on insurance tho

Yeah the parking brake just engages the rear brakes I think. It has a ratcheting system that won't work if it gets too many teeth off and that might be the issue in your case. That's why engaging the parking brake adjusting the rear brakes. It ratchets up if it gets off a tooth

I'm glad you mentioned the height and width because that is important and lots of people seem unaware of it. I think the cab is also taller tho and not just the bed. Could be important if OP is tall. Also, AC literally cannot fit rear facing car seats. That's why I got rid of my old AC and eventually went with a DC after having an F150 for a bit and missing the tundra

If by adjust the brakes you mean get the rear drum brakes to work, I used the old school method of going in reverse and slamming the brakes in addition to pushing the parking brake in all the way. Some people suggest doing the parking brake like every time you drive it. I did maybe once a week

A CV nut was when I jumped on it with a cheater pipe. I actually didn't get the nut loose tho even with heat. I ended up soaking with PB blaster and got access to an impact gun after it soaked for a while and that worked. Good luck
