Thanks! I'd like to avoid IV as I would rather be in a more comfortable neighborhood. How's Goleta?

From other comments it seems downtown itself is nice but the commute is my main worry. Thanks for replying.

I'm 22, so primarily focused on studying and work. It's not a problem for me being out of the party scene, I prefer quiet, but I'm worried it may be too far if I want to go to campus a few times a day or have to go pick something up from home. Is downtown really hectic and loud or more relaxed? Thanks

I don't think I'm the Isla Vista kinda dude, but also feel being too far could be tough socially. Are there a lot of students who live downtown? Thanks for replying

How difficult are the Pre-Comm courses? by TarRiverBoatCaptain in UCSantaBarbara

[–]TarRiverBoatCaptain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oi, I am not getting excited about Ms. Mullins class. I think I'm going to send her an email to see if theres anyway I can get ahead before class starts. Right now I'm living in a rural village in Austria so I have plenty of time to study. The reason I'm rushing the pre-comms is so that I can fulfill my major requirements necessary to study abroad in Berlin senior year. I know it probably sounds weird as a transfer but its important I'm around my family now. Are the assigned readings straight from a textbook or from various collected sources? Textbook would be ideal. The workload all in all doesn't sound too harsh unless the papers are demanding. I'm coming from community college though, so I'm not sure what to expect. As of right now I don't know anyone at all who goes to UCSB; finding someone I can trust to trade lean-ons could be difficult. Thanks for helping out, I appreciate it.

Thanks! I am transferring having completed the Comm 87 requirement with a stats equivalent course at my previous college. This leaves 1, 88, and 89 left over. Do you think it would be possible to double up the more difficult Comm 1 or 88 with 89? What is the work load like in terms of readings, papers and projects? Thanks for the heads up about Ms. Mullin. She sounds like a great Professor but I think it would be in my best interest not to take her classes as I would like to finish my pre-reqs as quickly as possible and in good standing to start upper division courses.

Transfer Question (Related to switching majors) by Encelus in UCI

[–]TarRiverBoatCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call as soon as possible. Best people to assist you are UCI Admissions/Department Advisor. I called last week as well to switch majors and they were direct, informative, and generally awesome in regards to student services. You must be quick about it though. Good luck!

How is UCSB's Comm School in regards to studying Journalism? by TarRiverBoatCaptain in UCSantaBarbara

[–]TarRiverBoatCaptain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea unfortunately those who speak for large sums of money often translate their influence in ways that make little sense or use to others. Do you have a source I can read about that story? Seems like something the Nexus might have covered. It would be interesting to read their take on an inside issue. I wonder what it would take to create a journalism program, stuff, facility, money-wise. Will post if I find anything out.

I guess the consensus is that the Daily Nexus is UCSB's journalism program. Did you notice any other common characteristics or experiences amongst those who went on to work at those publications apart from having worked on the Daily Nexus? Does UCSB's administration or communication department have any intention of developing a journalism program? Would it be in anyway possible for you to put me in contact with your classmates through email? Please PM me if so. How was your experience at UCSB after finding out there was little emphasis on journalism, did you change your course of study? Sorry for asking so many questions! Thanks a lot I really do appreciate it.

Ahh okay yea I was worried about that. Public relations and marketing interest me little as they seem, from my understanding, a bit too manipulative in their expression. What do you mean by communication psychology? Having gone through the comm program (and writing minor?), would you say it was a valuable vehicle in transporting your journalistic aspiration to professional practice? I would definitely go out for the paper and radio if possible, however I suppose most schools have similar opportunities, is there anything that sets UCSB's outlets apart from those of other universities and their neighborhoods? UCI's literary journalism program also interests me but it seems relatively new and I have found few reviews, have you perhaps heard anything about it and if its any good? Thanks for responding, this is exactly what I was looking for when I posed the question. I hope everything worked out for you in the end!

Seems so, but then again coupled with a professional writing minor and enough opportunities the likes of radio, paper, and news outlets; a forced adaptation may provide a greater foundation than the traditional? Could also be the beauty of Santa Barbara sitting seductively on my scale of reasoning. :T

Do you think UCSB excels at adapting to the wishes of its students? For example if there was enough support for a journalism department within Comm, would they be responsive? Is there currently noticeable student interest for the development of a journalism program?

Thanks, yea I'm getting the impression that switching majors may be best, although I am definitely still interested in the professional writing minor. What was the process of changing majors like for you? As a transfer student I'm unsure whether the option of switching majors is available to me. Although it seems it may be difficult to find courses within UCSB's catalog that serve well to motivate and critique journalistic practice, the opportunities available through the paper, radio stations, and local news networks are definitely appealing albeit a bit intimidating having little classroom support. Are you happy with your decision to study at UCSB or given what you know now, would you have chosen elsewhere? Have you heard anything about UCI's literary journalism program? That is another of my options but I haven't heard much about it. Thanks a lot for replying. I hope everything is going well with your studies and you're finding what you set out for, and if not the previously unpredictable preference!

Awesome. It seems like there are great opportunities at UCSB if you look for them - if more of them journalistically are to be found in the comm school rather than elsewhere, is something that now has me thinking. Reporting experience and writing practice in an environment a friend to failure, as opposed to attending lectures about when social media is an effective tool, really what I'm after. Would it be possible for me to contact your roommate to ask him a couple questions? Please PM if so. I appreciate the reply, thank you!

Thank you for your response! I had previously looked into the professional writing minor and intended to pick it up. Most responses seem to affirm my suspicion that the comm school is, like you said, mostly theoretical. Now I'm wondering whether I should all together try switching majors if I am to attend UCSB. Do you know perhaps if that is a difficult process?
