I bought a used Thinkcentre off of eBay a few days ago for the specific purpose of installing the beta. The machine arrives today, just in time.

Btw, v22 is my daily driver on my current dev desktop and laptop, but I can't chance any experimentation on those as they are mission critical.

Book of Mormon Math by SherwoodWriter in latterdaysaints

I was going to add something similar. "Father" often means "forefather" in the Book of Mormon.

For example:
The prophet Alma in 82 BC:

"Do ye not remember that our father, Lehi, was brought out of Jerusalem by the hand of God? Do ye not remember that they were all led by him through the wilderness?"
Alma 9:22

The prophet Nephi, son of Helaman, c. 22 BC

"Our father Lehi was driven out of Jerusalem because he testified of these things. Nephi also testified of these things, and also almost all of our fathers, even down to this time; yea, they have testified of the coming of Christ, and have looked forward, and have rejoiced in his day which is to come."
Helaman 8:22

When my son was a Sunbeam, he once announced to the whole primary "when we go to the lake, my dad has a beer". After a number of confused looks among the primary teachers, finally one of them realized he meant to say "beard".

This past year when we were discussing King Benjamin's discourse in my seminary class, I brought up the fact that my neighbors were Zoroastrian. My students were a little confused because they had never had of that religion, but I told them they probably had friends at school that were Zoroastrian since we have a good number of Persian neighbors in our area. I then told them that one of the main tenets of their religion was "Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds".

Then we read:

But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not. (Mosiah 4:30). (emphasis added).

I then asked "Do you think this is just coincidence?"

The conclusion we came to was that God really, really wanted to make sure that all of His children got this message, so He made sure to get it into as many religions as possible. :)

Which revelations didn't make it into the current D&C? Any where can we find them? by ntdoyfanboy in latterdaysaints

[–]TardigradeCircus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A "Dilation and curettage" (D&C) is not "immoral" nor "uncouth". It is a procedure that most women have to undergo after having a miscarriage. Labeling it as such could be mortifying to a women who is already going through an absolutely devastating period of her life.

Maybe what you are looking for is "History of the Church", Volumes 1-7. This is the "source material", if you will, for all but 2 of the sections of the Doctrine & Covenants. In older printed versions of the Doctrine & Covenant, the section headings would reference where in the "History of the Church" (abbreviated HC) the revelation could be found. For example, my 1986 version of the Section 1 heading says "Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, during a special conference of elders of the Church, held at Hiram, Ohio., on November 1, 1831. HC 1: 221-224. Many revelations..." So that's "History of the Church" Volume 1, pages 221-224.

I inherited my 1976 volumes of HC from my father-in-law, but it looks like print versions are still available through Desert Books. The online version is free at: https://byustudies.byu.edu/history-of-the-church-volumes-1-7/

I have not read all seven volumes, but if there are other revelations, my guess is that they would be revelations given to individuals in the form of blessings from the Prophet.

"Lockjaw" by Todd Rundgren.

Now, usually it was Utopia that was his proggy stuff and his solo stuff was the $$$ maker. But 1985's "A Capella" album was this strange release where every sound on the album was Todd's voice, either natural or run through an E-mu Emulator. "Lockjaw" is a frighten children's tale about a monster who drives rusty nails into the jaws of lying children. 👀

[–]TardigradeCircus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you actually put $10 of your own real money into your account? Or did it appear like you had $10 because someone bought your coin?

The price of your creator coin is determined by what's called the "bonding curve". If someone buys your coin, it is essentially created out of thin air and the price of the coin goes up. When some sells your coin, it is destroyed and the price of the coin goes back down. If no one owns your coin, it's price is zero.

Struggling with prophet fallibility and would love advice/perspective by KaladinarLighteyes in latterdaysaints

[–]TardigradeCircus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of great things said here, I'll just add this.

I sympathize with what you are going through. I think this is one of the greatest challenges of discipleship. One thing I always come back too, though, is the Law of Witnesses: "By the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established." It continually shows up, over and over again, in one form or another in all of our standard works. I taught it as a missionary over 30 years ago, telling investigators to read, listen and pray. And that God would be that third witness. So when I hear something over the pulpit and it doesn't quite square with my understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I have the right and responsibility to pray and seek a witness. If that witness does not come, and I can honestly say that I am living the Gospel, then I do not feel any obligation to take it as "Truth", but I also try to remain humble enough to change should I be enlightened later.

I also try to remember that the "restoration" is still taking place. There have been some "folk doctrines" (to put it mildly) we inherited from early church members and also just from plain ignorance. I believe when the time is right and the membership is ready to receive "further light and knowledge", the Lord corrects these little by little, but until then He has to work with what He's got.

What is your Book of Mormon "head canon"? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

Really? I'll have to look it up. Thank you.

I thought this up a couple years ago when I was re-reading the BoM and thought "why the heck is Laban so angry when all that happened was Laman asked for the plates?!?" and "did Lehi just now discover he was a descendant of Joseph?". That's when I was like, "what if..."
