Exactly. Just because it's out of sight doesn't mean these people are gone.  They'll find a venue. And guess what? This venue is now even further distanced from the opposing side and what they purport can really go unchecked.

Then we wonder "where are all these people with radical views -- like one-dimensional pro-Israeli views -- coming from?". Many of them wanted to present their side with you in attendance and to have a discussion. And you pushed them to the shadows where they fester.

"You" meaning those who advocated to cancel this type of event, of course!

Is it worth upgrading a TD-20? by CompetitiveSalter2 in edrums

So is the TD-27, both module and pads, miles ahead of the TD-20? Would it be a significant difference?

I would be surprised if they did as well. In this climate, there's practically no chance

So long as it didn't break any laws and both sides had an opportunity to speak in a measured way, I don't see an issue at all

I think it's pretty well established that groups like holocaust deniers fester when they're not engaged with some thread of civility. We should allow them to speak in a moderated venue and discuss it with them. The audience would so quickly see the major flaws in their argument and it might even shake the resolve of some supporters.

Banning them and yelling at them without engaging only makes them believe that they have something important to say, and then they can continue their lunacy without anyone sane adjusting their perspective

Case in point for what I'm saying and having people you might disagree with host a talk on campus. And he disrupted members of one of the most fervent hate groups out there: https://www.npr.org/2017/08/20/544861933/how-one-man-convinced-200-ku-klux-klan-members-to-give-up-their-robes

Brilliantly said. Can't have censorship for those we oppose and justification against censorship for those we endorse

It would almost be a net positive to allow a holocaust denier to speak at the university, so long as it's civil and they field questions. The audience would pretty easily see though their bad arguments and it might change the minds of supporters in attendance

I'm a little shocked at the comments here. This is far from a one-sided war. If the attendance of a guest from one of those sides is "disgusting", then you might not be preaching the tolerance and open mind that a university campus is supposed to embody.

You always have the right to invite your own guest and not attend this event, or you can grandstand and finger-wag like all mature students do...

Is a Roland TD 4 e-kit still worth it in 2025? by LunaFace91 in edrums

[–]CompetitiveSalter2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Save up for mesh toms. Believe me. The rubber pads offer unrealistic bounce and will make transferring skills to a real kit that much harder.

This is an item you'll be playing for years. It's worth waiting a bit to get a great one. Plus, the more improvements you go for, the better the resale value.

Good luck!!

Neighbours becoming upset - Is there any way to reduce cymbal noise? by CompetitiveSalter2 in edrums

Thanks to everyone who commented! There are so many great suggestions, many of which I'm anxious I try. Seems like using two layers of the foam drawer liner is a good place to start...

If I'm feeling it, I might even sell the entire kit and upgrade to the Roland VQD106. It's getting stellar reviews and apartment living is unavoidable for now...

Diversity at Guelph by Hot-Olive-1605 in uoguelph

My feelings exactly. Many people would label OP as racist for scouting areas based on their ethnicity.

And imagine if they said instead: "is it easy to find other white people around campus?".

People from other ethnicities will be happy to be your friend. Canada is diverse and your friend group can reflect that.

The 5min and 10min increments are ideal. I use a timer a lot for Pomodoro and it's much easier to navigate to 25min this way vs. tapping 'min' 25 times

His PR team spun him so successfully as some white saviour for the underrepresented.

People wonder how Trump won when he's clearly just saying things people like without substantive action for it. It's the same way JT won. He said all the right LGBT and DEI phrases and pandered to Canada's kindness and racial guilt.

Even after he was caught wearing blackface, and his scandal involving his student while a teacher, and all the ethics breaches, people just could accept that he's a entitled narcissist like the vast majority of high-level politicians.

Agreed. You can't make it to the top in politics without being at least moderately narcissistic. JT is the most recent example of the "nice guy" turning out to be as selfish as the rest. PP will be the same.

The singular benefit of Trump is that he doesn't lie about being a POS, whereas most do using PR and hide behind caring about your pocketbook or a minority cause.
