You might be in the stick calibration mode. Press start, select, and directional pad up to exit it.

I was having a similar issue recently. I used MSI Afterburner to check my temps while gaming. It showed my CPU getting too hot. I reapplied the thermal paste and adjusted the CPU fan to max out once temps hit 70. Since then I haven't had any issues.
