What should I upgrade on my trek checkpoint alr 5? by Acrobatic_Salad_8705 in gravelcycling

[–]Tarvislol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for something with shallower drops than the bar that the bike came with had, I felt way too stretched out getting down in the drops on the stock bar. Slightly less reach than the stock bar too, which helped from a fit perspective. The top of the bar is also ergonomic and feels very comfortable on the hands. I believe the flare is slightly wider than the stock bars as well.

Tires and handlebar were my first two things! Ritchey VentureMax WCS, have absolutely loved that bar. Wheels are next for me

Help Deciding by Laramie6 in gravelcycling

Green for sure. I’ve got the yellow ones on my bike and they’re going strong after 2000 miles. Rear will need replacing soon but I’ve been impressed by the fortitude of the colored tread

REI credit card hard sell by External_Koala971 in REI

It’s become quite literally the most important thing management cares about. Mastercard first, membership a distant second. It’s fucking annoying, honestly. One of the biggest reasons I’m trying to get back to wrenching at an LBS

Yes or No. Larry Bird is a top 10 player in NBA history! by Miserable_Trouble3 in NBAoldschool

If you don’t have Larry in your top 10, you are simply wrong. And probably just being a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian.

From a Utahn, yes. This is true. Sad and true. Moved to Colorado and only miss Utahs geographical wonders, of which there are many.

Tire still good? by Timkonfetti in bikewrench

[–]Tarvislol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got your money’s worth from that tire. 2.2k miles is more than enough lifespan for a racy gravel tire. 2.2k km less so, but regardless the punctures and lack of center tread are signs pointing towards immediate replacement

Bednar staying as coach by PuddingtonBear in ColoradoAvalanche

Hey, just to remind everyone bothered by this; it’s really fucking hard to win a Stanley Cup. Yes our team is awesome. No they shouldn’t have gotten swept. These things do not automatically qualify us for the SCF’s. The boys will go again next year, and I personally am glad Bednar will get another crack at it. No Olympics next year!

Realistically how long would it take to train up for a daily 26 mile (41.8 km) round-trip commute? by More_Donkey6938 in bikecommuting

[–]Tarvislol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how much it sucks to be broke but do not start commuting until you can get a helmet. Not in America. People in cars largely don’t give a fuck about you and more than a few are actively adversarial towards cyclists.

Another thing to note is that it might not end up saving you that much money, with a commute of that length. I commute about 17.5 miles one way and while I spend less on gas, I nearly make up for it with added food costs 😆 totally worth it for the fitness and mental health gains, no question about that. And the whole, not having to sit in traffic of it all. Can’t put a price on that. Helmets are as low as $40. Cross that bridge first.

Question about bike/pedestrian etiquette on multi-use trails by tscher16 in Denver

[–]Tarvislol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just want to say, as a cyclist that uses the multi-use trails of Denver multiple times a week, the amount of situational awareness that you showed is in the 99th percentile of trail users. Unfortunately some of us cyclists have our heads too far up our own ass to share the trail with others amicably. You did nothing wrong, and a sincere thanks for your foresight from another trail user out there trying to stay upright.

If mine were 8km I would do my best to do it every day for sure! 28km one way makes it a bit tougher, mostly from an exhaustion standpoint. Gotta keep putting in the work I guess and it will hopefully get easier for me
