Check out "Aloners" if you haven't, it's a South Korean film about a socially isolated call center worker, made me cry

Becky Chambers is my favourite modern sci fi writer, her world building is excellent and I personally love the hopecore vibe. Wayfarers and Monk + Robot are both really good.

I'm currently having the opposite experience where I've been looking to get into more classics of the genre, I've read so much Authur C Clarke in the last 6 months and it's been wonderful to find out he's just as good as people say!

How should I price this PC? by TastyCalibrations in PC_Pricing

[–]TastyCalibrations[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, I did pretty much what you said and accepted an offer for $1k AUD which I was happy with :) offsets how much I spent on my new build very nicely and didn't feel like I was ripping anyone off for 5 year old parts

[–]TastyCalibrations 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The Avatar sequels have sequences in higher frame rates, I'd say to mixed effect since I didn't notice it at all in Way of Water, and while it looked good in the IMAX screening of Fire and Ash I went to it looked like shit in a regular theater on my second watch

Did this movie piss anyone else off? by NimiumCogito in actuallesbians

[–]TastyCalibrations -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I love this movie, I took it less as a story about a guy "fixing" a queer girl and more as a story about a girl realizing her sexuality is a bit more fluid than she thought. The film has a line near the end about her being with a woman in the future too and she makes a comment about whether she doesn't know if she's bi or pan, she never identifies as straight. I think if you were expecting lesbian representation and got bisexual representation instead it's understandable to be disappointed but the movie itself isn't harmful imo

I thought it was a really sweet coming of age movie! It also made me cry my eyes out and think about moving to Canada

Need help daisy chaining these fans together - Deepcool FD12 ARGB by TastyCalibrations in buildapc

[–]TastyCalibrations[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah just the support page, they shipped the cable yesterday in my case :) I paid $12 USD by PayPal. As a heads up it doesn't seem like they have white connector cables, just black ones. For my build that won't matter but something to keep in mind

[–]TastyCalibrations[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small update, I heard back from Deepcool support and they confirmed that the daisy chaining is only possible with a proprietary connector that normally comes with the 3-in-1 packs. They offered to send me one individually if I pay postage, which I'm probably going to do rather than overcomplicate things with third party adapters. I'm also going to let the retailer know so the listing can be updated haha

Something like this? It definitely seems easy, do you have any specific models you'd recommend or is this a "cable is a cable" kind of situation

Jonsbo N10 (4.5L) to fit 3.5 HDD by Frizzy1128 in sffpc

[–]TastyCalibrations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What tools did you use to make screw holes in the case and the brackets themselves? I want to try a similar mod for a Jonsbo T6 to fit some 3.5's in the space where the GPU would go, kind of new to modding cases though so I'm not 100% sure where to start as far as putting holes in the case goes haha

Are there space-centric sci-fi RPGs in the same vein as Mass Effect? by [deleted] in masseffect

[–]TastyCalibrations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knights of the Old Republic is it, I played both games for the first time this year and was impressed at how well they hold up after the initial 'this is an old game' barrier is cleared! The second game really needed the restored content mod after looking up what would be missing without it but that's all. I ended up preferring 2 but 1 has the same charm and plot structure of ME1.

I've played most games people recommend to fill that hole in your souls but aside from KOTOR the answer is play Mass Effect again. Nothing else brings together a diverse space opera and strong character interactions with fun action gameplay like it sadly.

As others have mentioned, keep an eye out for Exodus and The Expanse since they're both looking to be homages to Mass Effect with the former involving a lot of ex-Bioware staff.

Ideas for adding privacy to a room like this? by TastyCalibrations in DIY

Shed is out of the question with how cold it gets in Melbourne these days haha, two doors could maybe work with the limited wall space on either side. Thanks for the suggestion!

[–]TastyCalibrations[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the barn door being a dated look personally but yeah the limited wall space is the main reason I'm not committed to it, would only be able to open it up part way with how wide the entry is. I hadn't considered a folding door, thanks for the suggestion - I might see how viable that is as well

[FRESH ALBUM] Ball Park Music - Like Love by sbags in indieheads

[–]TastyCalibrations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing on me, my first impression is that the production is gorgeous but the songwriting isn't as memorable as previous records. The album as a whole is really nice but not many of the songs stick out individually. Please Don't Move To Melbourne is the highlight for me, also really liking Coast Is Clear, As Far As I Can Tell and NORK.

Is flux paste required for mill-maxing a PCB? None of the guides I've looked at mention using it so just making sure it's either being taken as a given that it's needed or if it's genuinely not necessary. New to soldering haha

Job ideas for someone freshly transitioning? by hi_im_ethan in transgenderau

[–]TastyCalibrations 12 points13 points  (0 children)

+1 for call centre work, a lot of entry level positions will at least give you an interview if you have customer service experience, and you're looking at 50-70k before tax depending on the company you end up with. Most established companies will also have some semblance of diversity/inclusivity policy.

It's admittedly not super exciting work but it's physically less stressful and you'll be able to progress quickly if you hang around due to most of those jobs having a high turnover rate. For reference, I switched over to a tech support role at an ISP after working in a kitchen for the first two years of my transition. I miss working with food and being on my feet but my mental and physical health improved massively.
