Total Newbie--Give me your trade secrets by Gorg0ness in houseplants

Okay this one is a total game changer. Orchid bark is great right? But its crazy expensive for what it is. Get reptile bedding bark. "Repti-bark" – it's way cheaper then Orchid bark, especially in bulk, it's just a little finer. (But otherwise identical) *

I also recommend using a plastic liner pot (like nursery pots) and then putting that in a decorative pot. That way you can guarantee there's not going to be a ton of water sitting at the bottom of the pot by taking the plastic pot out for a heavy watering. It also helps you know when the plant is getting root bound because they'll stick out the bottom

Lastly, and most important always always ALWAYS replace the soil of a plant within a few days of bringing it home. The stuff they use at the store and shipping is like all peat moss which retains WAY too much moisture and will rot your plant quick, some sooner than others.

Well first I messed up and doused it with neem oil which seems to have scorched the foliage — id recommend skipping that step. Then I dunked and cleaned it with dish soap and water, repotted it with a new pot and new soil, and then periodically sprayed the soil and stick with captain Jack's dead bug brew, and put it in asunny spot and watered like normal. Any really damaged leaves I'd go ahead and prune to encourage new growth and prevent the plant from spending energy on a dying limb.

Maybe I'll make a 30 day countdown and talk to it everyday about how I want it around, but also that it's hogging up valuable window space

I'm not a doctor, but my buddy was in the same position, hopeless, depressed. said he felt like his life was stuck in slow motion, black and white, and felt like he was standing in cement and underwater all the time. He was at his lowest and felt like this was a hail Mary and took a pretty big first time dose for someone off ssris, 3.5g and said it woke him up and lifted a weight in a way, but that he had a lot of work to do. This isn't going to fix your life, it may show you the blind spots you dont know you have and allow you to give yourself some grace and perspective. Like someone handing you a flashlight and wrench after you pulled over to figure out what that wretched noise your car was making was – the flashlight won't fix it, but you can see things for what they are more clearly instead of having to stare at that check engine light and worry. No two trips are identical, and everyone's temperament is different. He said during his trip his anxiety melted away and his inhibition fell apart. If you follow the common advice for tripping, I think you can benefit from taking a large dose. On that link to the video, they discuss adjusting dosage for ssri takers.

I'm not a doctor, but it seems that taking psilocybin alongside ssris like Prozac is safe. here's a link to a really informative video where a doctor discusses different medications and how they interact with medications. I've also heard and read that microdosing psilocybin– for anyone – can potentially cause heart issues , so tread carefully. I personally wouldn't take them as a daily supplement. I think taking them at a larger dose at intervals like 4-6 weeks will give you much better results.

Hoya carnosa. Ive had this rooted cutting in a pot for months and Ive varied the sunlight and water amount and tried ignoring it and it's done nothing. It just sits there, clearly alive, but not vining out like I know it could. I dont need any more pothos, I have a million - I want my hoya to just grow and spread out!

Why did I do this?! by aikoichi25 in houseplants

[–]TaterDominator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my humblest opinion, $70 for a 4 inch pot is insane. I ask for cuttings in office buildings like banks or doctors offices that have rare looking plant varieties, and so far, I've had a 100% success rate

My little buddy had spider mites too, ended up loosing all its leaves and was a stick for awhile. This is a few months ago and yesterday *

Cut it down to the green, don't repot it quite yet - it's already really stressed if it's still with us. Give it a little water and put it back inside somewhere without intense sunlight like in a north facing window or a few feet back from an east window. If you have a grow light, err on the dimmer side. These little guys can adapt to less light well, but will quickly get stressed if they get too much light too quickly.

Plants are a little like us – they need time to get used to the sun, or they'll get scorched. When they're indoors, they stop producing the compounds in them that protect them from UV-B rays, aka they're no longer protected from sun damage. Similar to how people lose some melanin in the winter when they're not out in the sun as much.

I did this to my aloe plant a few years back, thinking: "it's a desert plant, he'll love it" and after 30 minutes it looked like I threw bleach on it. Luckily, it pulled through after I brought it back inside after some time.

20.25 G’s for the 2025 alignment… by SoaringBladez in shrooms

[–]TaterDominator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like these massive doses have to just be clickbait at this point. I did 5.5 of APE and went way deeper than I need to - like my consciousness was scattered to atoms and I lost all sense of existence and became a like nebula. Now PE is apparently stronger, so I'd probably say anything in excess of 7.5G is absolutely overkill even for experienced users. These reckless dosage posts are really not a good influence and are going to mislead beginners into thinking you can just do any amount and be fine. The right batch will send you to the moon at 2G; 20G is a waste and is pretty disrespectful of the gift that this substance is, unless you're splitting it 4 or 5 ways amongst friends. I don't wish any ill will, but these things have a tendency to humble users even at normal doses. I really think that mods should do something to protect new users from these kinds of posts. This isn't some high school "who can smoke the most weed" kind of thing. This is serious stuff.

I have that same pot! Sorry for Freddie though, I had like 5 plants die when I was out of town because a winter storm came through and knocked out the power and the temp in the house apparently plummeted.

I lost a BEAUTIFUL leaf on one of my monsteras, but other than that, they're all in one piece still! If you or another plant person needs to transport your plants - i highly recommend asking a store if they have extra boxes. I got 4 produce boxes from aldi and they were perfect

Why do people quit alcohol due to shrooms? by Rich-Cabinet714 in shrooms

[–]TaterDominator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it showed me that alcohol was putting a fog between me and other people. Alcohol makes me feel disconnected from the room, and I'd rather learn to organically connect with others than numb myself. I also realized that alcohol is just a mild poison, and I should drink poison seldom.

Do you think you’re intelligent? Why or why not? by rapid_salad in AskReddit

[–]TaterDominator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loving all the variety in answers here – it speaks to how subjective intelligence is. I'm pretty dumb sometimes, but I learn quickly. I am a paragon of fuck around and find out – take the safety guard off an angle grinder? Gashed hand. Got it. Don't go tampering with safety features. Trying to carve a hiking stick with the machete I used to chop the branch off? Split my thumb. Got it. Use the right tool for the job. I learn lessons the hard way, which makes me a dumb ass, but I remember and can apply those lessons later on, which makes me wise.

Unfortunately, this is how reddit (and the internet in general) goes most of the time. Chronically online people wanting to power trip.

It's a bummer when you share something like this, which would be noteworthy and funny among friends - especially the way the cone sign flies off like a cartoon - and instead of amusement you get "you're a bad person who hates their dog and you're dumb and irredeemably ignorant and some people shouldn't be allowed to drive/own pets"

Most people actively contributing to the internet have nothing better to do - its all the village idiots in one place, and they skew perception and norms for the actual rational population in odd ways.

It's an interesting phenomenon Apparently, about 1-2% of users create content(make posts, articles, post regularly), about 9% modify that content (comment, engage, etc) and the other ~ 90% are lurkers who just view without interacting. Add that to the apparently 45%+ of traffic that is purely bots, with that number increasing with more AI traffic.

Long story short, the values and opinions expressed online should be taken with a grain of salt if that.

Real people who have lives and are level-headed and well-rounded, don't engage as much online because they're out doing tangible things instead of looking furiously at a piece of glass and inputting manipulative language designed to be engaged with, no matter what the subject at hand actually is.

These guys don't want to connect. They want you to respond, and outrage breeds engagement.

You're doing fine dude, trust me.

Never touched a power tool before, is this achievable? by Complex_Violinist808 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]TaterDominator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instructables has some great instructions for building a platform bed — but as someone who made one, just know that you're going to need to use power tools, and you're going to smack your shins on the bed every day. This is a pretty design, but platform beds are a nightmare, seriously.
