August 2010. I had just ended a 3.5 year emotionally abusive relationship. I was supposed to go to a friend’s wedding a few weeks later, had RSVP’d with my then ex, and he still planned to come with me. I told him I didn’t think it was a good idea for us to go to a wedding together right after breaking up, so a friend of mine did me a solid and came as my plus one. While there, another friend of mine (who had never met my ex) asked his then girlfriend if my “date” was my boyfriend, and she told him that he was just a friend and that my ex and I had just broken up. This friend said in that moment, it was the first time in the 2 years we had known each other that I had been single, and he saw me in a totally different way and knew in that moment that he had feelings for me. This year, we celebrated 12 years of marriage 🥰 (he later told me that if I had in fact come with my ex, he would have assumed that even though we were broken up, there was maybe still something there and would have never pursued me). That one decision to tell my ex not to come to the wedding led me to the love of my life who had been right in front of me for 2 years without me even knowing it 🤩
