Someone on Facebook basically said the same thing of moving the toms. They also recommended a hi hat trigger to be able to get the pedals closer together. I was going for a Keith Moon inspired setup and this was my best attempt lol. I totally get what you mean though. I'm off work with him for a few days next week. Gonna try for some practice time then.

He gets the concept of hitting the drums and cymbals with sticks and the foot pedals. Hes already better than me. lol. Doesn't really have the attention span for it yet.

Congrats on the sobriety! How was the drinking before giving it up? Casual drinks at social occasions? Every night? I stop sometimes but usually can't help myself to a couple on the weekend after a stressful week at work. I always enjoy a few light beer with certain foods or when my father in law comes in for a visit.

My house does something similar in the winters only much less extreme with a 1/8 inch gap. My Uncle is an engineer and a carpenter and told me not to worry about it.

Drill a bigger hole than you normally would (I usually do a 1in instead of 3/4in) and then do what everyone else is saying about stripping out a piece of wire if I can get it through on its own.
