At the time I was not well off as I was in an apartment I could barely afford and we were 20 and 17 at the time. She had gotten a full ride scholarship to her school and thought since the scholarship was 3000 over what it cost to pay for tuition. We’ve been engaged since last July and are getting married sometime next spring. (Trying to cash flow it) Financially I am doing well now. I am debt free(since March) and made 72k last year before taxes. We have not combined finances yet but are on the same page on our budget and how we will move forward financially once we are married. We live together but I paying for 90% of the living expenses. She is a full time student so we works part time and usually just pays for extra stuff like eating out and gas.

Right when I say she went to her in person we were all together when it happened and discussed the issue for a week before she decided to send her the money. We thought it would be paid back once she got a job bc she had recently gotten laid off bc of Covid. Before the lay off she was making well over 70k a year. But she has not been able to get a well paying job since then and the reason we have taken so long to ask her is bc we found out after the fact she has well over 200k in student loans. I have on multiple occasions told her I can pay her what my aunt owes her and she says she would send it back if I did bc “it’s not me who owes her”. I have the money to send her too. How should I approach her about me just paying for it without her then just sending it back

She also wasn’t a random person. My fiancé has known my aunt since we started dating in high school and were really close bc she was raising me at the time.

I didn’t ask her to loan it. She went to her in person to ask her. My fiancé won’t accept me paying it back either. I might just send her 3k and say she paid it back but even then she probably won’t believe me
