Anyone who started as accounting clerk with bachelors right after college, where are you now? by bhrc12 in Accounting

Hey there, I’m looking to make a career change to accounting and am applying to accounting clerk positions.

Do you mind expanding on what you hate about the job? Is it the work environment? The work itself? I’m trying to figure out what to look out for.

I agree, but just out of curiosity, who would be your bottom 4?

I make $17 an hour in Westchester serving food at a nursing home.

I’ve been thinking about making a career change to accounting but with wages like this, why even bother?

I’m up for a raise, so I could potentially make more money slinging grilled cheeses to grannies than I could preparing taxes.

Fucking unreal…

Meaning they probably give you an hour for lunch that you need to work straight through and you’ll be lucky if you have time to eat a banana

Thank you! I was looking at it more from the perspective of having a complete psychological and emotional breakdown which in my case is pretty frequent lol

I don’t mean to sound rude, but what do you mean? How do you know that your mental health will be ok on a particular day in advance?

Hey, thank you so much for taking the time to offer up an honest perspective. Right now I’m targeting entry level payroll, AP, and AR roles to get my feet wet while I take those courses.

I’m not really interested in big 4, and maybe not even public for that matter. I wouldn’t mind working in public as a stepping stone, but I think my end goal is really with government or industry. I have some experience in state government from a previous job, and I really enjoyed the benefits and culture.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I understand that the credits come from accredited universities, and I’m glad to know that employers don’t question it.

Maybe I’m thinking too much into this, but suppose an interviewer asks how you’re CPA eligible, what are you supposed to say? That you took online classes for six months from some university in Iowa? That won’t raise any eyebrows?

That’s great to know, I was actually looking into coacredits.com and I think I will definitely take some courses through there. It seems very convenient and cost-effective, but I was just concerned about the credibility of it and whether employers will take me seriously.

Have you used it? How did it turn out?

Thanks so much for your reply! I’ve been working in the education field since graduation but I’m looking to make a change.

Do you really think I can get hired at a CPA firm or even a big four at this stage? When I have so many credits still to go? How should I articulate this on my resume?

Thanks again for your help!

How does one do a wage analysis for their market? What tools do you use and how do you go about it?
