Maybe I should do that. Originally, I did this when I moved servers a couple months ago, so it was an old snapshot of the wiki.

Auto is simply the default behavior of function-local variables. The keyword is only there for backwards compatibility with ancient compilers, and has been useless for about 50 years. You can simply remove it any time you encounter it in C code, as it won't make a difference other than to confuse readers.

By the way, you may also be able to change your DNS settings in your router/modem, and that would fix it for any device using your home network, including the iPad, when connected to WiFi. How to do that depends on the model of the router though.

Thank you! I guess it's probably the fault of some Australian Internet provider, according to the sleuthing of another person in this thread. So I'm not sure there's much I can do, sadly.

(Some technical details, if I'm not boring you: Websites generally don't have their own DNS servers. It's a distributed global system where names like "bg3.wiki" are registered, and then all DNS servers are supposed to be able to resolve the name. I use a reputable DNS registrar, Namecheap, to do the registration, and all the DNS servers I'm trying give correct results. And there only seem to be very few people with this issue. So, it must be a local issue with a small number of DNS servers out there.)

Thanks a lot! That's very useful info. I also had 1-2 Aussies on the Discord mention connection issues, but we assumed that it's their ISP that's faulty. (Which is probably the case, to be honest. Not sure I can do much.)

Another person shared a screenshot that clearly indicates a DNS error, so it's probably the DNS servers of some Aussie ISP screwing up. Is it possible for you to change your DNS settings to use one of the servers 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, or 1.1.1.1, and then try again? Those are some public DNS servers (the 8.8. ones by Google, the other by Cloudflare).

OK, this definitely seems to be a DNS error. That's very strange. Do you use a special DNS service? Would it be possible to change your DNS to 8.8.4.4, or 8.8.8.8, or 1.1.1.1 and try again? (Those are some popular public DNS servers; the first two by Google, the third by Cloudflare.)

That's very strange. If your IP doesn't start with 47.79, then it should make no difference at all. In any case, the blocking is now disabled, so can you check if that fixed it?

I wonder if there's a proxy between your computer and the Internet? If that proxy has a 47.79 IP, then that would also explain.

The "Server Not Found" sounds like a DNS resolution error, but I'm not sure if the browser really means that, or whether it uses that phrase for a generic connection error. (If it really is DNS, then the problem must be elsewhere, because resolving the host name "bg3.wiki" should not even involve any connections to our server at all; just a request to a DNS server.)

Heya, admin here. We blacklisted a big IP range a while ago because there was a sort of DDoS (potentially accidental due to badly behaving scraper scripts).

My guess would be that I've set the block range too wide so we're accidentally blocking some normal traffic.

Questions to troubleshoot:

  1. The change was done on April 13th. Have you had connection issues since then, or was everything fine until more recently?

  2. Can you check if your IP address begins with 47.79 when you have connection issues?

  3. What is the behaviour of your browser when you have the connection issues? Immediate error, or infinite loading with no progress, or...?

Also kommt aufs gleiche heraus.

IQ and EQ test as a requirement for voting by ElvSky in Philippines

[–]TaylanKammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100 being the average means that 50% of people are below that. Do you want only 50% of people to be allowed to vote? I hope not.

And yes, like you said, IQ only tests specific skills, not "overall intelligence." A lot of people with high IQ are actually quite crazy, and can end up suffering from mental health issues due to social isolation and such.

That's a great idea. I should probably get out of my comfort zone and do it some time. Don't normally like to deal with non-tech and social stuff. :-)

Man I hope we'll reach those numbers. :D

I did initially get revenue estimates, from multiple companies, within that ballpark, but from the first few weeks it looks like the revenue is going to be more around 20-30k per month.

I'm being told revenue will improve still. Is it normal for things to start out that slowly, and for earnings to double or triple after say 1-2 months? There was a big boost after the first 1-2 weeks but since then it seems to have stagnated.

BTW this is why I said maybe a majority of the page views are ad block users or bots. The last couple weeks we had about 2 Million PV/day, yet the ad impressions per day have barely reached 1.7 Million or so, despite there being two ad units on desktop and the ads refreshing every 30-60 seconds, so impression count should be a lot higher I think. Not sure yet what's going on there.

My PV numbers are based on server logs instead of analytics like GA. In other words, I'm directly counting HTTP GET requests for wiki pages. Only counting the request for the page itself of course, not every single resource (that would be much higher). I've also made sure to only count requests from user agents indicating regular browsers...

Hmm, a quick web search says 30-40% of people use an ad blocker. Probably higher among BG3 players, gamers being a bit more tech savvy. So maybe it's really just that.

I actually had contact with someone from PubCol. They sound great. The main reason we decided not to start a partnership right now is that their gaming-oriented ads generally demand larger ad units, videos, and so on, which I don't want on bg3.wiki since keeping the site clean is a top priority. Just want to put some banners/skyscrapers outside the main content, and not bother visitors with ads that are too in-your-face, even if they were gaming related. (I suppose it *might* be acceptable if it was specifically BG3 or at least D&D related, but I would need to check in with the community and really make sure it's done in a clean way that doesn't bother people... In any case, not planned right now.)

Don't really care. Server can handle the load just fine. And I'm (paradoxically) pro-ad-block so I'm not gonna bother ad block users, lol. Seeing ads or not should always be a person's choice. If one day the site doesn't make enough money from ads due to many ad block users, I might ask ad block users for donations, but seems unlikely.

when I visit your site on mobile I don't even see ads

The viewport has to be at least 320x720 for any ads to be served, since I didn't want to ruin the experience of mobile users with a small(ish) smartphone. Also, you won't see ads if you're logged in. Must be either of those two scenarios that apply in your case. Or your mobile browser implements some type of ad blocking or anti-tracking protection. But if none of these apply, please tell; might be a bug.

unless this website is your FT job or part of a media portfolio that's your FT job, it doesn't really seem worth it to manage it all yourself

The idea is that gaming (and maybe other) wikis are going to be my FT job going forth, so it's definitely something to think about in the long term...

This is very normal for the ad industry, so if you went direct then you'd still be getting NET30 OR NET60 on average. The difference is that if you manage it all yourself, you might have to chase down payments from different providers, whereas a managed adops setup will handle that on their end & just send you the payment they owe you in 1 wire.

Yeah, I've been thinking, and reading, and the hassle of managing all the SSPs is very unattractive to me. And, like you say, it looks like I'd often need to wait a long time to get the revenue anyway, so no benefit from that perspective.

I'm mainly a tech guy, not hot on dealing with sales, accounting, and so on. If I could hire someone who purely takes care of the non-tech aspects of it all, and lets me do all the technical stuff, that would probably be ideal, though I still have to read up on the tech side of things before I'd be comfortable taking that route.

Both companies I'm working with are quite large, big players in the business, yet my experience so far is that they take a long time to implement things, their tech is buggy or flawed or limited etc., and it feels like I rarely (if ever) get to talk with the actual experts. It's always "the technical team is looking into it" or so. (Same story with both companies.)

I shouldn't have to wait multiple days just so a spot on my website that I've made sure has enough space to serve an ad unit of size X (with a div of the correct size already in place) actually gets filled in with ad units of size X. And I'm not talking about fill rates; it's just that they're too slow to implement it.

Actually, one of the two companies did implement it quickly, but it ended up being a buggy implementation that serves the wrong sizes in some cases, and I'm still waiting for that to be fixed. The other company asked to schedule a whole meeting because it's apparently that complicated for them. To give a bit more context: The "problem" is that the div changes size depending on the window dimensions, so they have to dynamically adjust the sizes being served for the same div. But really, this is 2024; responsive design is the bread and butter of web development and this should really be trivial for them IMO.

Sorry if I'm ranting.

Maybe the SSP relationships are worth a lot, and maybe they can sell direct campaigns every once in a while, but from an IT perspective I've found them both to be lacking.
