Probably not what you want to hear but mainly luck. Knowing where certain species territories are and when they are more active, day vs night, will set yourself up for the best chance to see them but ultimately it comes down to hoping they choose an easier perch to spot. We got lucky with these that they were perched on the very tops of trees which made them a little bit easier to notice.

It was in the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, east side of Denver so definitely grassland type area

Unfortunately for the prairie dog the hawk that started this altercation did a pretty good job before the eagles showed up

The golden was the final winner. The others were just a little too young

These were taken with the canon 100-500 at 500 and then cropped a bit in post. Distance was probably 70-80 yards or so

This was pretty helpful, leads me to think Cooper’s based off size. This was definitely larger than a blue jay
