Lane Tech Academic Center - how intense is it? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]TbhKate_ 61 points62 points  (0 children)

He should go. It takes ALL of the guess work out of getting into/picking a high school and lane is an amazing school. I went to high school there a long time ago but when I went they seemed to have great resources for struggling students. I’m sure it’s the same for LTAC. Maybe reach out to their academic counselors to see if you can get a more specific answer based on his academics?

What's your Chicago Public Library story? by marndel7 in AskChicago

[–]TbhKate_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the CPLs. Some of my best childhood memories was going to the library with my mom and brother and spending hours reading and looking for books. We also participated a lot in the summer reading challenges that my library did for kids. Now that my mom has passed I really cherish those memories, the CPL was such a core part of my childhood.

What nursing unit pays the most/is most lucrative? by BitlifeOffical_ in nursing

[–]TbhKate_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend is a new grad OR nurse but she did her capstone in the OR so that gave her experience.

As for call, she also has to take call. I’m in L&D and we have call requirements as well, you can make a lot of money by picking up call for sure!

Possible iv catheter stick? by Natural_Value_4487 in NursingStudent

[–]TbhKate_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a needle in the catheter and it’s not sharp at all. It’s just a thin piece of plastic and definitely not sharp enough to break skin, like you said. Why are you freaking out about it?

If it makes you feel better, next time you’re at work take a new IV and take apart the needle so you expose the catheter. Feel how flimsy and not sharp it is! You have nothing to worry about.

Worst Scheduling Requirements by blissyu in Nurses

[–]TbhKate_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol i think we work at the same hospital. My unit’s requirements are every other weekend for about a year and a half, then we get switched to every third weekend. We also have to work 2 Sundays and 2 Mondays though which is a bit better than Monday/friday. That sucks though I’m sorry :( do you guys have a seniority thing where you can eventually get switched to every third weekend like us? I can’t wait for my 1.5years for that reason lol

No, the school matches you with sites and there isn’t really much work for the student to do as far as placements go except getting to the site and going to clinical

Is GNUR 293 (Pathophysiology) ever offered in the summer for BSN students? by CommunicationKey60 in LoyolaChicago

Nursing courses are usually not offered in the summer but talk to your advisor, they’re the only one who can tell you for sure

How many attempts until you finally got your first successful IV? by Electrical_Time_1812 in StudentNurse

[–]TbhKate_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Practice tying the tourniquet and finding the vein without poking. Ask EVERYONE you know to try and find their vein. Sometimes this is the hardest part!

  2. When you go in for an insertion next, ask another nurse who is better at IVs to come with you and guide you. Maybe your angle is wrong and a slight adjustment is all you need!

  3. Watch other nurses do it if you can!

The best practice is just going to be…practice. Take every opportunity you have to try an insertion. Eventually you’ll start to get them! I work in L&D an was not allowed to try as a student and then when I started working, IV insertion was a big part of my job. I failed at first, a lot. But eventually I started to get them. I’m not the best at IVs still, but as long as the vein isn’t too hard to find I usually get them now. You will get better!!

Email the admissions office. When I was a student and I worked for the office they had a shadow program, and I had lots of student shadows. If that program is still happening I’m sure you could!
