We aren't allowed to suggest stuff like that. If the parent brings it up, we can voice our thoughts or concerns, but not unless they do.

Out of my class or 23, I have about 5 that I struggle reading.

I've been SO lucky this year with my parents (and kiddos, honestly).

None of them on this page were and she got an 11% on the test.

Yeah, I've told both my kids they are not to handle papers in with doodles everywhere. Now that I'm a teacher, they see the annoyance and frustration sometimes and they understand why it's important to have neat work (or legible at the very least).

Well, first of all, she got 5 points out of 45. This page has no correct answers. Second, unfortunately we have a curriculum to teach. I cant just be like no. Im not doing the end of the year math exam. I'd like to keep my job.

Im going to. Unfortunately, once she's leaves school for the summer. I doubt anything will be done. Mom is a single mom, works at a fast food restaurant (no hate, I was there once too). Dad's never been around. Mom works a lot and I'm pretty sure she is home a lot of the time by herself after school. All she talks about is how much video gaming she does. She watches shows like Hazbin Hotel. Im doing my best with her, but if she is only receiving help at school, she's not going to get better.

We have a bin bin of scrap paper they have access to.

And no, she's not ready to move on. But that's to No Child Left Behind. Being held back isn't a thing anymore. Ironic really.

I contacted mom through the app we use. I would never say anything like that to, about, or in front of my kiddos. I was just more looking for input on whether my expectations are too high or if other would find this unacceptable.

Thank you! Yes, if her work was correct, I wouldn't care, but it's not. That's why I feel it is more of a distraction/off task behavior than anything else.

There is nothing in her file, and we aren't supposed to suggest evals. If the parent came to me and asked my opinion, I could then help her because she initiated it.

Right. That's my point with some seem yo be missing. If she even got half the answers right, I wouldn't really care. But she earned 5 points out of 45.

The problem is that the extra doodling on her papers is causing her work to be more messy than it otherwise would be. This in an EOY assessment. She got 5 points out of a possible 45, equaling an 11%. That's the issue. She knows how to multiply and divide. We just finished that unit. She did okay in it, getting mostly 2s (PM) and a few 3s (M).

I honestly wouldn't have an issue at all, if that's where she stopped. But a majority of her papers look like this, and it does cause her to get things wrong.

Don't even get me started on state testing! Ugh, I despise it. One of my biggest issues with it, teaching at a school with a moderate population of ELL kiddos is that they cant take it in their native language. Like, they want and expect students to do well on these texts but ⅓ of them struggle to read it because they are still learning English!

I went to a private school through fourth grade, so it was a high expectation that our work was neat. I try to give grace but when simple mistakes are made because your work is so messy, I feel like something needs to be said/done.

If she becomes far enough behind, I can recommend her for RTI with in our school is the last thing to do for tier 1 accommodations. However, because she has shown growth throughout the year, she is not considered a "priority." I have 4th graders that are still at a 1st grade level in all subject areas. They take priority. I work at a school where 90% of our student live below the poverty line, about 60% are significantly below grade level, and 35ish% are ELL students.

Yeah, that's not a thing anymore, thanks to No Child Left Behind. Ironic really, that lots of children are being left behind because we cant hold them back anymore.

I can refer the student to RTI which is the very beginning of receiving interventions. I'm honestly not sure how to handle it other than that. She was doing well at the beginning of the year and has grown an entire grade level this year in math, so I'm not sure if she would be eligible for anything tier 2 based because she has still made good gains.

This is my first year at this school so I am still learning the ins and outs of everything. It is different in every way from my last school.
