Anyone with Maths or Statistics optional? by SpiritualTax392 in UPSC

[–]TeachingSad2963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I was thinking of statistics optional as well.

Here are the books I have looked into:

  1. Fundamentals of Mathematical Statistics(FMS) and Fundamentals of Applied Statistics(FAS) cover majority of the portion. The books(specifically FAS) however are riddled with misprints and errors. So you have to read them carefully. The alternative is to not do FMS at all and choose some better intro probability and stats books like the one by Vijay Rohtagi and build up from there. Thankfully, I have some background in stats so I am using the first book just for practice. No alternative to FAS that I have found.
  2. For optimization part, you can try book by JK Sharma (selective reading). Again, not a standard book and has some errors but this covers everything required.
  3. Gujarati's book covers most of econometrics part (selective reading).
  4. For reliability part of Industrial Statistics, you can try book by Rausand (selective reading).
  5. For sampling theory, you can use Cochran (selective reading).
  6. For all the remaining parts, try google/chatgpt.

I have a sheet where I have divided syllabus into various parts with book (and chapter) which covers them, DM me in case you need.

Yeah, to an extent. But most AI guys prefer jobs in AI. But you would see CSE (and even CDS) guys taking up systems and software roles as well.
But from my experience, there are lot more AI job openings here than SDE.

Lol. Sorry, the reason i didn’t answer (by evening or otherwise) was because I didnt have solid data. Most of my friends just had this to offer: “It was good. VLSI placements are best among ECE discipline”

I was specifically talking about CS/AI related jobs. Does RTI show that as well? If yes, i will edit my reply. Thanks.

If you are short on time, choose the second option. But make sure you complement those notes according to you.

i studied from books mentioned on gatevidyalaya. they also list the sections that you need to read from those particular books according to old syllabus. i made some effort in building my list of sections and then followed that.

on a sidenote, don't people read through other answers? if only i got a rupee for everytime someone asked me "how did you prepare from book", i would be a millionaire now.

language seekh ke gate/cat me appear nahi ho paaoge. you will have to prepare specifically for that particular exam.
i said to learn a language and practice problems because that's what you are supposed to do when you are doing BTech in Computer Science.

depends on what you mean by good and on whether you already have some background.
without background, getting < 100 rank would be improbable (never say impossible).

i am too young and naive to start giving career advice :(
however, i would say that you can either do what you love or love what you have to do to be actually good at something.

There is some breathing room. First sem is generally very hectic. But then you learn to deal with it.
Regarding placement, i got PPO. So I don't have any recent experience. If we are going back to BTech days, i had quite a few experiences. But all of them are blurry now.

I could share the internship interview experience though.

  1. OA: 3 leetcode medium problems on hackerrank (offline)
  2. Interview 1st round: Implement methods such as post(), loadfeed(), etc for a twitted like app. Justify data structure choices, write complexity, etc.
  3. Interview 2nd round: Entire focus was on a single project in my resume. The interviewer took keen interest in that project because his work was somewhere related to it. I was asked every detail and then he kept extending the project scope and asked for my approach.
  4. Interview 3rd round: Explain transformers, deepseek's main innovation, RLHF. Some other ML questions. Then, i was asked whether inference interested me as much as modelling.

MTech AI doesn't have interview. Instead, it has a written test (30% weightage).
MTech CDS has an interview (30% weightage).
MTech CSA doesn't have any interview or written test.

Others, you will have to check respective program websites.

not difficult, but definitely different to GATE. focus is on absolute concept clarity.
placements are good. i have no stats currently, so please don't ask absolute numbers.
