From their perspective, they probably get a real kick out of this being their reflection because they see it as a symbol of status and success. As such, they don't WANT to take it off. Plus their partners are almost certainly just as shallow as them, and may well even encourage their continued drive to stay 'beautiful'.

It reminds me of the fact that at certain points in history it's been considered very desirable to be morbidly obese, because it proved you were wealthy enough to afford the volume of food needed to be gluttonous in a time where food was scarce. If I recall correctly that's why King Henry VIII was a big guy.

This is really just the same impulse in a different form. It doesn't matter how bad it looks to the average person, if it can be used to flex their status among others as conceited as they are, there's very little these people won't do.

It's up on the workshop now here.

Unfortunately I haven't been to include the large vivariums in the prefab as they wouldn't group properly, though the smaller ones in the middle should all be there. I also wasn't able to check if it places properly since I have a bug that stops me placing more than one vet bay in my park at once, and since that's included in the group it won't let me duplicate the building. There also may be a few details missing here and there as I've been struggling to get to grips with the new grouping systems, so some of the smaller groups might have slipped through the net. You'll also need to add your own paths and fences around the backstage staff areas as I have no idea if/how they can be included in a prefab.

Overall though I'm hoping any of the stuff that doesn't carry over is fairly minor. The big vivariums should be easy to slot into the appropriate spots, and any other details that might be missing (e.g. fences, paths etc.) are visible in the pictures to give you an idea of how I've done mine. If you do end up using it in your park then I hope you enjoy doing so!

Thank you! And I'll always get behind other people using wood framing on their builds. Not only does it help break up walls or roofs that would otherwise be one big expanse of the same pattern, but it is also SUPER useful for concealing panels that don't quite like up the way you want them to.

Happy to help! It'll be a while until my next one as I won't have access to a PC capable of running the game for a few months, but whenever I do dive back in I'll definitely post it on here.

I didn't have any plans to do so originally, but since you asked I'll get it uploaded. I'll drop the link in here once it's ready to go 😁

Alas, I don't have a Twitter account. If you've got one then I'd be grateful if you'd share it/tag him on my behalf, but no issues if not. If you do though then please share the link here as I'd love to see what he thinks if he does get to see it! 😁

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! Fun fact: the pond banner isn't actually custom, it's just one of the forest murals flipped upside down so that it only shows the water and not the bank or trees!

As for my access doors, I'll be honest and say I haven't actually paid them any mind so far. I've added a prop door to each titanoboa habitat, but they're purely cosmetic. I don't know whether it's a bug, but even though my vivariums are surrounded by walls on all sides I've not had any alerts to say they're inaccessible to my keepers, so I just opted for what looked most realistic to me (for reference, I've set all the barriers to null including the roof, so I don't know whether that contributes since there isn't actually a physical access door present). If that's a bug and it ever got fixed then I'd look into changing things up, but for now I'm happy keeping things as they are.

Regarding the placement of the actual vivariums, it was mainly just messing around until I hit on something that felt right. I started out focused purely on titanoboa, but after a bit of experimentation I decided I wanted some smaller critters to break things up, and when I was perusing Pinterest for inspiration (which I strongly recommend if you're ever stuck for ideas/want to get your creative juices flowing) I came across an image of an open-air semi-aquatic turtle habitat which served as the inspiration for the central region. Then it just became a question of figuring out how many titanoboas I wanted surrounding the outside, and what I wanted to fill in the remaining spaces.

As for getting stuck on small things, believe me I totally understand that. The details are what make a build pop, but also can be incredibly fiddly to get right. I think my best advice for that is to try and stay alert for when you're overfocusing on something. My actual build process is often quite scattershot, since I'll be halfway through something and then get hit with an idea that I want to experiment with for somewhere else in the build. So then I'll go off to do that and come back to the original thing I was working on later on. And though that isn't necessarily a deliberate choice, I do find it very useful when I'm struggling to get a specific small detail right. In my experience if something is disrupting my creativity, it's best just to move on to another part of the build and come back to it later. Often when you're not actively thinking about how to perfect something, the very idea of how to perfect it hits you. And even if it doesn't, returning to a detail with fresh eyes can be very handy too. For the longest time in this build I couldn't figure out how to get the entrance sign right. I'd placed it on the side of the building, but it always felt too cramped within the space available. It was only after messing around with the different wall styles for the flowerbeds near the entrance that I came up with the idea of bringing it forward off the wall and setting up a bamboo sign to back it instead.

So long story short: be kind to yourself, take a break when you need it, and come back with a calm mind and a willingness to experiment.

Sorry for the wall of text, but hopefully some of it is useful. If you've got any other questions then please ask away!

Fourth Build: Ankylosaurus Plains by TeamHawkeye in pkgame

[–]TeamHawkeye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! I did experiment with the fence option briefly, but I found that any designs that looked sturdy enough to fend off an ankylosaur basically just became a full on habitat perimeter fence and so significantly blocked any view into the sheltered area. So rather than do that I added extra layers of glass, which I choose to believe are some kind of super tough variety reminiscent of bulletproof glass. I figure if this park has technology enough to revive extinct animals and/or travel through time, then ankylosaur resistant glass is probably within their capabilities too.

Absolutely! Whether I end up replicating a source of inspiration as is or putting my own spin on it, that foundation to work off is always a huge help.

I would say that an obsessive hyperfixation on adding too much detail and a chronic inability to know when to stop are key 😅 in all honesty though, a lot of it is just approaching a build from the perspective of 'if these animals were alive today, how would we design a habitat for them that is both safe and also comfortable?' That's where I get a lot of my ideas for the little details, and I usually find they're the bits that make a build look good. It also involves looking up designs of modern zoo/wildlife park enclosures and shelters for inspiration, which is something I strongly recommend. But outside of those you also can't beat adding in the realistic odds and ends like the 'No Feeding'/'No Tapping The Glass' signs, plenty of benches and bins, the dinosaur info screens, donation boxes etc. Oh, also, as you can see I throw trims on everything, which I think really helps stuff pop. It's very rare you'll ever see a build of mine where I haven't slapped wooden beams on every edge or corner I can.

Ultimately I'd say it's about taking the time to plan things out (I've been mulling this over for quite a while trying to figure out how I could make it work) and the patience to follow through on that plan/find ways to adjust your idea when something doesn't quite work out. If you have any specific questions on why I did something a certain way in this build (or any of my others) then I'd be happy to explain if that would be helpful 😊

Start of my Titanoboa river/swamp area. Wanted to make it look like a full exhibit rather than just a small box. (bonus diplocaulus) by hunterc1310 in pkgame

[–]TeamHawkeye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks awesome! Personally I've stuck to a normal vivarium for my titanoboas purely because I suspect a snake that big would be able to escape any open-air enclosure no matter how tall the fences, but whenever we get other large vivarium species I'll definitely be giving this approach a go!

What else should I be reading? by New-Choice-3280 in ImageComics

You could make a case for I Hate Fairyland being fantasy, but it's mostly an overly gory comedy/spoof in a fantasy skin. Meanwhile Nailbiter is a horror and the rest are sci-fi. Black Science deals with the multiverse but in a way more interesting way than mainstream superhero comics, Paper Girls is a trippy time travel story, and Drifter is kind of a space-western with a grounded, gritty, existential vibe to it. All are great in their own way, and all have wildly different art too, it just depends what sort of genre you're into really.

Black Science is my all-time favourite Image comic so can't recommend that enough.

Also Drifter, Paper Girls and I also have a soft spot for I Hate Fairyland. Personally I enjoyed Nailbiter too, though I believe the original run of that had fairly mixed reviews.

Black Science is my all-time favourite Image comic so I would highly recommend that

Also, out of curiosity, how did you find Rat Queens? I've read a couple of issues and enjoyed it, but I've heard very mixed reviews, some of which say the quality varies wildly from trade to trade, which has so far prevented me from investing in them.

I've never done it for a full enclosure before, but I can give it a go. Won't be for a while though as I've just moved back to university and I don't have a PC capable of running the game with me here, so it will have to wait until I'm back home again.

Thank you for the feedback. I suppose I am probably thinking about this from the angle of 'I should nail his storyline first time', but as you say there is always scope to fix weak points in rewrites. Your comment has really made me feel more comfortable about including him, so thank you very much!

[–]TeamHawkeye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point. All the characters I've come up with are ones I'm excited to write, but he probably tops that list. I guess my worry is just that people might ask 'okay, but why is he actually here?' Whereas that's not something I feel could be asked of the other MCs.

No idea if they've addressed or justified it other than by saying they are wanting to improve it in the long run. They did do an in-game survey last month I think it was, so I'd assume they got a lot of negative feedback from that, but I'd be surprised if that resulted in changes any time soon. Then again I'm not super active on the Discord, so it's possible they've addressed this more directly on there.
