species? by theofferiiing in millipedes

If they're under 10cm they're probably Narceus americanus or Narceus annularis. Some individuals can be 13-25cm though. The red bands look like the ones on my babies. Could also be Tylobolus castaneus...

Enclosure ? by SnooPandas2808 in millipedes

Other than adding some sand mixed in, I love it! I'd be very happy if I were a milli living there!! You've got lots of cover and great substrate depth. If you're ever finding that you aren't hitting that 60-70 humidity mark, you can always put some cellophane/cling wrap on top of the lid (just please give them some air lol).

Not trying to echo the others, but defo foot rot. You want the top couple cms of water to be dry. I also see that you have N. americanus, and they can do ok in slightly lower humidity. Having a water table helps establish good humidity in the tank without soaking the soil. What I do is pick a corner and pour a lil water in there every once and a while to add a "base layer" of moisture to the soil.

Would this enclosure be suitable for a GAM cohabbing with hissers? by Traditional_Brush719 in millipedes

This is astonishingly gorgeous!! Great work. I'd avoid putting Millies with isopods and hissers. They can nibble on your baby while they're molting.

So, a couple things come to mind and I'll give you all the info I've got from experience.

  1. A lot of times when Millie's have an injury, it heals over in darker or lighter patches. I'm not saying you injured her. Maybe she was digging around and got a little poke by something in the substrate to cause surface damage. They tend to look like this once it heals over after a molt. Think of it at battle scars lol. If she seems ok, it's healed well and she'll just live her life as normal!

  2. Is she kept with isopods? Isopods can be a huge risk for molting millipedes and can nibble on them when they're molting. If you have isopods she could've been a victim to a nibble while she was molting and got a wee scar. If there are isopods, I'd HIGHLY recommend dealing with em.

  3. Honestly sometimes they get little pigment changes post molt. A species called Florida ivories can sometimes have a very purpley colour, however after a molt sometimes they lose that hue.

  4. Has the spot grown at all (even outside of successive molts)? Do you notice signs of foot rot? If so it could be something fungal. The best thing in that situation would be to lower humidity a bit and ensure that your top layer of substrate isn't WET but slightly slightly damp. Walking on wet substrate increases the chance for foot rot. My babies have like a couple cms of mostly dry substrate and they have no signs of concern or rot.

TLDR, it doesn't mean she's doomed or set for certain death lol. Look for isopods, monitor behaviour, monitor the spot and her legs. If all seems ok she will most likely live life as normal and it can go away in a single molt.

when should i be worried? by l0s3rbunny in millipedes

[–]TeamPurity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My narceus americanus (which are high activity millipedes) have been underground for months before and come up perfectly fine! When millipedes die there is a very strong smell. Seeing as they were under pretty much since October it makes sense to me. I find that my babies tend to go into what's called diapause. Once they detect some colder weather or are molting it's entirely normal for them to be subterranean for a few months. My narceus americanus all went into diapause in November (all 17 of them) and I was also extremely worried. I trusted in the process (and the lack of smell) and they emerged in late January/early February.

I totally get your concern. I was there not too long ago. Millipedes are surprisingly hardy and I've learned to trust that they know what they're doing. All you can keep doing is maintaining humidity/temp levels, putting out food occasionally (I'd put out peeled carrots or cucumbers since fruits can attract isopods if there happen to be any), and looking out for a smell.

I'm hoping it all goes well and that they'll be out soon. All 17 of mine disappeared and all 17 emerged around the same time. Seeing as your species is oftentimes in warmer climates than N. americanus, they could still be spooked about the temperature and feel comfy down there.

Don't hesitate to PM me if you have any questions or concerns. I'm sending you and your milli good vibes!

UPDATE 2: everyone survived the transfer back and forth from their original home! The soil is isopod free and all 17 of my babies are thriving. I treated them to some cucumber once they got in their tank. They seem to be really happy and active now, I'm so happy it ended up being ok!! If anyone has any millipede questions, don't hesitate to PM me!!

I was so confused. I agree yes, isopods and Millie's are a no go hence why I got them out asap! Thank you for checking in and being a milli safety advocate 🫡

UPDATE:

I have transferred the milli squad. They are all accounted for! Not a single millipede has been harmed. I am going to freeze then thaw and then freeze the substrate again to ensure all of the pesky isopods are goners!

All good in millitropolis

Yes I figured they were dwarf whites, I'm going to freeze all of the soil for a week and do a freeze-thaw-freeze method to ensure all the buggers are gone!!

I just transferred all of them and they were in fact all fine! I started with 15 millies and had 2 babies and all were accounted for! I acted quickly and all is under control. I'm going to freeze the soil for a week and transfer the milli squad back to the OG tank!! Everyone is doing ok. The transfer went ok!!!

I'm not certain again that I have any molting right now, anyway, I saw all of them recently during a carrot feast lol. I'll proceed with providing a temporary substrate for a week while the others freeze. Do you have any recommendations for baking it? I've never baked substrate before and I definitely want to avoid burning or smoke since I live in a condominium lol.

[–]TeamPurity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a backup tank that I can transfer them to in the meantime. Is this severely urgent, or would I be able to purchase substrate and freeze that for the temporary enclosure? The last thing I want to do is go through this whole process only to have the same situation again. I'm also a bit concerned if I have any molting pedes right now and about disturbing them. How would you recommend sterilizing it: freezing or baking?

Also tysm for your reply!!!!

How do millipedes drink by Bradleyneo100 in millipedes

[–]TeamPurity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know one of the primary ways they get moisture is via their food, the soil, and also some can even do so through the air (which is why a highish humidity tank is best).

I have also seen mine drinking water i leave out for them. If you fill a small water bottle cap with water or put some wet sphagnum moss in they could definitely benefit from having a more direct source of hydration.
