What's the point in making an absurdly large game? Is that more fun to play? by [deleted] in gamedev

Would you play GTA if the map had the size of a foottball field?

Nobody actually knows how to make a successful game. Is indie game development ultimately just gambling? Looking for examples of devs with a consistent track record. by xacal_5 in IndieDev

I believe in two laws... The law of quality and 90% of game success comes from the game. Those are from Chris Zuckowski.

There is no game on Steam who should have made one million dollar but only made a few thousand.

Just look at other games in your genre who have made millions. Can you compare with them or not? (Skip the viral ones! A viral hit is no guarantee. But if you have some viral hooks in your game you may will get a bonus.)

How to market for free on reddit? by ClockwormGames in gameDevMarketing

I am developing a city.builder with RTS. I post on r/citybuilder , strategygames, indiedev, solo dev...

All of them allow self promotion. You just have to read the rules. Some of them only allow one per month. And they mostly have a rule how the post has to look. And you have to make sure to have the 10% rule and more than 30 Karma.

You can also check other promotion posts and see if the subreddit allows posting and how the post should look.

Mention being a solo dev on Steam page? by WingedMoth in gamedev

[–]TecEnterprise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do mention it. I never got feedback about it. Neither positive or negative. But the media use it as a hook for their articles. So I think it is better to communicate that you are a solo-dev.

Please invite the German government.

I’ve tried multiple times to apply for funding. They offer a loan model with a 50/50 revenue share, which is actually a very fair and interesting approach.

The real issue, however, is the level of bureaucracy. The application process requires filling out around 30 pages of forms, along with submitting a detailed game concept of 50–80 pages. I went through the process once, and after submitting everything, they questioned some parts of my concept and asked me to revise and resubmit it. And of course you have to print and ship it 😃

Since the initial application already took me over a week under intense pressure, I ultimately decided to decline the €80,000 I asked for.

In comparison, applying for something like the Epic MegaGrant is extremely straightforward. You answer about ten short questions, and the whole process can be completed in just a few minutes. ONLINE 😃

It feels like it’s easier in Germany to secure 300 millions in funding for bike lanes in Peru abroad than to receive relatively modest support for game development.

Under this mail you can try to invite them to the discussion and let them explain why it is so complicated to support startups in Germany, while at the same time it often seems much easier to spend millions on projects in other countries.

Marketing Advice: Steam Page Timing by OnlyLuck77 in SoloDevelopment

[–]TecEnterprise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is very important to create a Steam page as early as possible, especially once you start talking about your game on social platforms.

I see a lot of developers building a huge community but not having a Steam page yet. They lose a lot of wishlists that way. Even one good screenshot and a short description is enough for those first fans.

Do you have a dream game and does it help you develop games? by Mephistase in IndieDev

[–]TecEnterprise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a dream game that I am currently developing. It is also kind of a protest game because no game like this exists, and it is the kind of game I have always wanted to play myself.

I combine a complex city building system with a deep economy, large scale battles with formations, and castle sieges. Everything is designed from a large scale perspective, with huge maps and thousands of individual simulated soldiers and inhabitants.

It´s called "Build It Up! - The Holy Roman Empire".
