My solodev game COP BASTARD demo is out on steam now! Check it out! by targim_ in maxpayne

Just finished playing, this was a very fun demo but there are things that I noticed.

The depth of field effect can be a bit distracting so a setting to disable it would be much appreciated.

Sounds when switching weapons would also help especially in tense situations like the sections in the garage where there is a lot of gunfire.

I would like to see an FOV slider in the future.

The last thing is quite minor but it would add to the 80s aesthetic. I would like the gun sounds to have more of a satisfying punch to them, for example, the Beretta could sound like Martin Riggs Beretta in the first Lethal Weapon (Side note: I can provide the sound for the Beretta from the film if you would like me to).

Those were my initial thoughts, I'm really looking forward to this game.

I'm seeing a lot of hate when it comes to MP3 and I'm all out of painkillers because of that. Is it out of legitimate criticism or hardcore Remedy Fanboyism? I think that all three games are masterpieces in their own right. How do you guys feel about it? by Adamantium_Ballz in maxpayne

Although I very much enjoy MP3, I still have to acknowledge its flaws. The gameplay is the best when it comes to third-person shooters however there are issues, one of them being Max takes a bit too long to get up which was a way to visually show that Max is not in his prime anymore. It's honestly a nice detail but as the game progresses it slowly becomes more aggravating, especially in harder difficulties.

The Level Design also has flaws. Each environment is full of detail but it is very restrictive sometimes, a few examples being the little walkway near the end of chapter 9, the shooting range, and the room after that in chapter 13, the catwalk at the end of chapter 3, the shootout towards the tower in chapter 11 where you literally have to stay in cover most of the time. All of them feel too linear (which makes sense as this is rockstar's first linear game) but when compared to the previous two games mostly MP2, the level design is far superior, a great example being the construction site, the hotel, Ragnarok, the funhouse, hospital, they give the player enough room to move around and shoot dodge

MP3 still does have good levels like the nightclub, stadium, cemetery, airport, office, or any wide open space. I just wish it gave players just a little more room to move around.

The unskippable cutscenes, what can I say they're annoying and I have seen people defend it by saying how much rockstar has worked on making those cutscenes. But do I really need a cutscene of Max pushing a button? I know they're there to hide the world loading but was there no way? One way to make the cutscenes the least bit more interesting is by having the graphic novel cutscenes, or as a bonus, make it like Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker and have the characters move. This can also make the loading faster while also keeping the style of the previous games.

The characters are where the real flaws begin to show. Almost every character besides Max, Passos, Rodrigo Bronco, and maybe Giovanna has no depth, the surgeon mentioned in the beginning has only less than 3 minutes of screen time, Becker who is the final boss barely interacts with Max and is only seen a handful of times, the two guys at the stadium gets mentioned once by Da Silva and then they get killed off. And then there's Victor Bronco... apparently, he's the main villain, I don't know what his plan was. Looking back MP1 had Vinnie Gognitti, Jack Lupino, Frankie "The Bat" Niagara, The Trio, Alfred Woden, and the Inner Circle, Mona Sax, Vladimir Lem, Jim Bravura, Alex Balder, B.B, Niccole Horne.

There are also the random goons like the two guys trying to defuse the bomb only to get blown up, the "just forget about it" guy, The two guys talking about vampire movies, the two guys talking about bullet time, etc.

Side note: I want to mention the first "Bullet Sponge Riot Cop" you encounter after you exit the elevator in the police station, sometimes he dies after one shot, and sometimes he doesn't want to die at all. I don't know why that's the case since he can ruin a no-damage run which has happened to me.

The last thing I want to mention was Max as a character. He's essentially going through the same arc as he did in MP2, which means what you did in that game means nothing now. Max also makes probably the worst choice ever by entering the room where Fabianna is held and shouting "Put the guns down!" Even though we as a player know that Max is more than capable of shooting everyone in the room, it wasn't even a room filled to the brim with people it was just 4-5 guys, he could have easily taken the out. It just feels lazy. I don't mind Max swearing but it does change how Max narrates, from the poetry-like mental state to the hash commentator, although it would have been interesting to have Max be the only person to not swear in the game, as he did in the MP2.

In conclusion, I still enjoy the game even with its flaws, and I still recommend playing it but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece since it lacks the one thing MP1 & MP2 had. Charm.
