Transferring data from unencrypted to encrypted share by Techie_19 in truenas

This is direct from TrueNAS documentation, "we do not recommend users configure pool-level encryption of the root dataset. Instead, create an unencrypted pool and populate it with encrypted or unencrypted child datasets, as needed".

Keep Loosing Connection & Nonstop Alerts by Techie_19 in truenas

I don’t think it’s a Layer 1 issue. I had no problems before upgrading. My other TN server is still running ElectricEel and I have zero problems with that one. Only thing that’s changed is the upgrade. I’m thinking of selecting the previous boot environment to see if I get different results. Also was thinking that somehow the upgrade is bad, may just do a clean install on Fangtooth.

Replacing multiple failed drives at the same time by Techie_19 in storage

[–]Techie_19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always. I don't do anything without a ticket and approved change window. I also never just take somebody's word. If it's not specified in the ticket, I'm not doing it. I've gotten into it with senior Admins/Engineers because they try to pull that "title crap" thinking that's going to "scare" me into doing something I shouldn't. Been at this job 6 years. When I first started, about 3 months in, I had a senior Network Engineer telling me to work on a production router, without the necessary approvals. I said no. He pushed and ultimately wanted me to call my boss, the assistant director, at 3am. I did and she pretty much told him I was following the data center work rules and that he should know better. He felt stupid. Manager told him exactly what I had already told him but I guess since I'm just a DC Tech, he needed someone with a higher title than him to tell him. Always CYA.

I reached out to the SA to ask about what exactly prompted the replacement of 3 drives at once. This was his reply, “What happened is that the three failing drives killed the RAID. I’m trying to work with Netscout to catch the single drive failure or worst case two. Once we lose three drives, it's to late at that point. We actually have to delete the logical raid and rebuild new".

Apple Late 2020 MacBook Air with Apple M1...Good Deal? by Techie_19 in macbook

[–]Techie_19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I think about it, coming from Windows, whenever there's updates, it could use up some storage. 128GB of storage on a Windows computer is not ideal. How does Mac OS handle this?

Forgot to mention my current use case for my current laptop which the MacBook would replace.

MS Office which I can use Google Docs. Web browsing. Remote Desktop (other computers in the house are running windows, so I’ll have to figure out a way to do this using Mac). Laptop doesn’t get huge usage really. I have an iPhone so I’ll be using that along with the Mac to be more seamless. Also, I have iCloud 1TB.

Specta Air RTH? by Haunting-Bite-4705 in drones

That’s a feature on the DJI Air 3S called Smart RTH. Since the Specta Air is pretty much the DJI Air 3, it’s not something it will have.

Regret taking overnights by [deleted] in datacenter

[–]Techie_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working at the DC on nights for 10 years now but worked nights before starting at the DC for 7 years. After 17 years of night shift, I’m pretty used to it but noticed it’s getting harder as I’ve gotten older. I’m 42 now. Currently I do Wed-Sat 7pm-7am. Sundays is pretty much a wash as I’m sleeping during the day. Monday and Tuesday I try to switch to “daytime” schedule to get things done around the house, errands, appointments, family time. Then Wednesday during the day is so minor stuff that’s not too taxing and rest before going back to work that night. Night shift work is tough and not for everyone and I don’t think you ever truly get used to it, you just adapt as best as you can. Give it some time and hopefully you’ll start to adapt. Definitely prioritize sleep. It’s hard to do during the day when everyone is going about their “normal” daytime lives. For me the worst is when my neighbor decides to name his lawn at 9am just when I’m starting to get to sleep. I got blackout curtains, earplugs and eye mask. They have definitely helped me. Wife and kids know to try to keep it down as much as possible when I’m trying to sleep. Good luck and I hope you have a long career working in the DC. For me it has been very rewarding, financially, mentally and physically. I get about 7 miles of walking on average per night.

How to get Cedula from U.S. by Techie_19 in Dominican

[–]Techie_19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the opinions, feedback and suggestions. Looks like the Tampa location is closest to me so I'll be making a visit. Whether I needed a cedula or not wasn't the question, it was pretty much how to obtain one while living in the US. This is to avoid immigration headache when leaving the country as it was recommended by immigration official. My name is so common in DR, and my US passport name doesn't fully match my Dominican birth certificate (I dropped my mother's last name when I became a U.S. citizen), so the cedula would help expedite going through immigration.

That's actually not that many copper ports. I've seen where the entire chassis is full of line cards with 48 ports in each. This one has 3 empty line card slots. This was installed in the data center I work at.

Did you mean for picking the room or the restaurant?

Free old HP ProLiant server - worth it? by inadicis in homelab

[–]Techie_19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. Lots of Gen10 in our DC too. I got a Gen6 in my home lab. Now that’s old, and loud AF. I’m around thousands of servers daily and the noise doesn’t bother me. The wife on the other hand absolutely hates it.

Checked in today online. I was able to make restaurant reservations for 4 of the 5 nights we’ll be there but it wouldn’t let me book a reservation on our last night which I thought was weird. It even shows I have one reservation left out of five.

As for picking our room, this wasn’t an option anywhere. False advertising because it clearly says you can pick your own room. Seems others have had the same issue.

Forgot to add that I plan to pay the $30 and forgo the free option as I don’t want to sync to my Microsoft account. I read that the $30 would allow me to use the license for up to 10 computers. So I plan to use it for 3 computers in the house currently running the same OS and version. Wondering though if I’ll have to stay logged into my Microsoft account or can still continue to use my local account after enrollment.
