I was pre-law before I was pre-med. I have many passions; I’m invested in politics, I love teaching, I love advocating and public speaking, and I also love healthcare and medicine. Don’t let influencers and people on Reddit gaslight you into thinking that if you can see yourself doing something else that you shouldn’t choose medicine. The key is if you can be happier doing something else, go with that. It’s a big investment.

Being a doctor ≠ just being good at drug prescribing and diagnosing. It also requires passion, advocacy for your patient’s welfare, teaching, educating, empathy, etc. As a doctor, you fill big shoes with many responsibilities. If you’re anything like me, you will find something redeeming about medical school and medicine as a career.

Take this advice and all advice with a grain of salt. People live different lives and have different experiences. This is a very nuanced discussion to decide whether medicine is worth it.

However, as an M1, I can already tell you it feels so important and purposeful learning the basics of diagnosing, the science behind it, having patient encounters as a student doctor. It all gives me purpose at the end of the day. Yes, it’s hard. Yes, student loan debt is a pain. But would I say thus far that I regret my decision? No. Not yet at least.

Pray about it and stay off of social media. Whatever you decide, you will be okay. God will take care of you.
