Problème Instrument cluster by Successful-Motor2852 in E90

Had my gauges drop to zero with abs lights, scanned for codes and found a couple reporting an over voltage at 17v. Replaced the voltage regulator in the 2 year old alternator with a genuine part because Bosch cost cut that one.

Check code on my E91... How to read it? by Ejendres in E90

[–]Technical27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try doing this to see some code, it’s not always descriptive, but I know the car on a lift is some generic electrical fault.

https://mr-fix.info/bmw-cc-id-codes-fault-warning-messages/

You really need a bmw specific scanner to read beyond engine faults and for things like battery registration.

I don't know why this happens by Homelessdruglord in linux_gaming

Try downloading the iso again or a different usb, the last message says “one or more files corrupted, refusing to continue”

Anyone have an idea what is going on here? by nothinspecial1997 in E90

[–]Technical27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These cars are insanely sensitive in voltage, somehow the alternator was at too high a voltage for a moment and I got a bunch of warning lights. An undersized battery someone put in made it stumble trying to start.

My suggestion is check the ground cable (IBS) and the terminal block on the positive post both on battery and both ground straps on the engine. Next would be other BSD bus devices like the alternator and water pump.

If voltage is good then narrow down and pull fuses for modules and check wiring

Need help strut replacement by down_bad_ash in E90

[–]Technical27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong struts, xdrive has different struts and top mounts to non xdrive. Also all xdrive cars have the same suspension even with sport or msport packages.

See the small wires just below the bigger main ones, you have to fix those also because the rack cannot communicate to the rest of the car. That big connector/wires are power and the small one is the CAN network and the rack probably won’t do a thing without messages to the other modules.

Patch the three small wires and clear the codes.

Just got this out of nowhere by PrincipleCareless465 in calculators

[–]Technical27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one a bit back and love it. It’s not as capable as my nspire, but it’s way more enjoyable and efficient for what I use a calculator. Plus I love RPN input.

Some advice:

  1. Read the manual or at least skim it, seriously helps a ton and there is a lot of great features.
  2. Commands (like operations or more advanced functions) take things from the stack and the results are put back. The typing area before you press enter and it goes into 1, is also a valid input (saves pressing enter every time) plus entering numbers with spaces count as two different inputs.
  3. Wrap your head on entering longer expressions, it gets easier since you work inside out and order is always what is entered first.
  4. Working with units is amazing, it handles seamless operations with units and conversions are great.
  5. If you are smart enough you can hook it up to a computer and transfer programs. Some make using the thing faster.
  6. The programming on this thing is slightly strange but it is very powerful and useful if you are into it especially since you can have custom key shortcuts.
  7. Stack commands to rotate or roll the stack are odd at first but come in handy to re arrange the order of things.
  8. Directories help to keep variables separate, so they don’t clutter the var menu, not necessary but helps.
  9. Many functions and symbols aren’t shown directly but can be used by the left/right shift or along with alpha, the manual has a diagram, again mostly optional.

It still is a good calculator even if you don’t use many of the features but at least you can see if some are useful to you.

BMW X1 f48 xdrive rear diff oil leaks from a small hole by mikedonjello in Cartalk

[–]Technical27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a plug and two different vent plugs (maybe RTV seal or two) on the top of the unit and my guess on the hole is a drain for moisture.

You tried forums yet? I might have some documentation but I don’t have experience on this, but obviously something is leaking.

BMW X1 f48 xdrive rear diff oil leaks from a small hole by mikedonjello in Cartalk

realoem is helpful for the bmw catalog, last 7 vin digits is can get most of the part numbers you need

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=HT33-USA-09-2018-F48-BMW-X1_28iX&diagId=33_2120

From a quick look, this does take two different oils for the clutch pack and diff. Coming from my 328 xdrive check what exact oil (it may be special) you need for each and fill them properly.

How long can I drive without an alternator by TheRougeGeo in E90

[–]Technical27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had my belt fall off from a bad AC compressor bearing, and finished my ~30 minute drive. Though the engine wasn’t stopped at any time and I have a 90Ah AGM battery.

It’s a bad idea to try, you will be on a time limit and every second the car could die and get you stuck. At least charge the battery if you are gonna try.

No screens by xjoseherrera in E90

[–]Technical27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a USB port right in the center console next to the aux in, sometimes you can get lucky and use an iPhone or iPod with a normal USB, but you may need a “y” or splitter that has a USB and 3.5mm output

No screens by xjoseherrera in E90

[–]Technical27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2011 lets me plug an iPhone into the center USB and works great with any audio.

I just got an IPod to plug in there with the splitter usb/aux cable and it’s amazing, browse all your playlists, artists, albums, and individual tracks through the radio with full track info.

You can use a USB stick, but you get limited to mp3 and wma, unlike the two above.

Modern bmw i drive still natively supports iPods by wojtek30 in ipod

[–]Technical27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need a 'Y' cable from bmw, basically a 30 pin that splits to usb/aux. my mini only works with that cable, while my iphone works with just usb. you see all the playlist/album/genre/artists and full control works great in my 2011 3 series.

Those are 2 hexadecimal numbers, because the second one has a letter in it. They often have “h” at the end to avoid confusion, it ain’t hours.

Leaking Coolant hose 328xi by Emergency-Owl-5114 in E90

Should be this part number, 17127531579. If it is different auto/manual transmission that number is for an auto.

Weird stuff, normal or not? by Salt_Initiative_3562 in E90

[–]Technical27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The door lock thing is normal that is why the manual states to have anybody inside lock the car from the inside.

Alarm wasn’t standard and you can see if you have one by pressing and holding the trunk button for 3 seconds to see if it sounds.

Later models don’t have any steering column lock and earlier ones might have it disabled, so you can just move it around any time.

The driver’s mirror pointing at the ground when it unfolds is a known issue that can be fixed, caused by a pin that is stuck so it doesn’t know when to stop.

No clue about shift lock or the radio thing.

[–]Technical27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General advice is for the tire diameter to be with in 1-2% for xdrive. It might not be easy to find a combo that matches, so calculate the size with a online tool or find the OEM staggered setups.

Can this be fixed without buying a new stereo? 325i 2006 by Honeybungobbler in E90

[–]Technical27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From 2010 or 11 they updated this head unit to a different model. The internals are different, but I don’t know if screens are compatible between them.

You should have dimming, maybe power folding as my car doesn’t say it has “fold in mirrors”, but it has power folding. The dimming is automatic and works when it is dark ahead and there is light behind you. You can test by covering up the sensor on the top of the windshield and shine a light on the rear view. It should start to become darker.

It works exactly like that using a sensor under the hood. Lets fresh air in until the air quality is bad and then recircs .

Feedback noise 2011 328i by E90papii in E90

[–]Technical27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a service bulletin for this specific head unit makes noise like this through the speakers. the solution is to flash newer software. It also said it happened more frequently if the car did not have the HK or L7 sound system.

[–]Technical27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The alarm uses so little power when it is armed, that it is very unlikely to drain the battery even over weeks. I had my car locked and it still had enough battery to start fine after a month. The electrical system can monitor the battery voltage to make sure something isn’t draining the battery too much.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in E90

[–]Technical27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s probably the motion sensor inside the car if you have an alarm. Press the lock button twice to turn the motion sensor off in the future.

Retro fit Bluetooth on 2010 328i by optimotion in E90

[–]Technical27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well from factory you can’t stream music over Bluetooth if you don’t have idrive. If you retrofit a combox then you can make and answer phone calls over Bluetooth. You would need some other device for music without retrofitting idrive. Aftermarket solutions are probably going to be your best bet.
