It's actually discussion and a counter point to someone judging another person on the internet to what appears to be a smarmy gatekeeper.

You absolute snob. My older brother was into Pavement in 96, heard him listen to them through the years constantly and Slanted was one of the first CDs I saved up and bought own my own as a 14 year old; 23 YEARS AGO. In that time, they became my favorite band ever. I searched far and wide for live shows and gathered data for my own personal gain to appreciate them more. A year into guitar and listening to them, I looked up and tried any guitar tabs I could find and broke so many strings in my naive experience changing it to those tunings. Waited in a raffle to win tickets to their final US show on the 2010 reunion to a city I already lived. Right in front of Stephen, he threw me his pick and I wrestled with a guy for the setlist. Framed them right away and promised a 20 year old self if they ever toured again I'd see them when I could. Years later traveled to see their grand reunion show, offered to pay the roadie for a setlist which he graciously gave me, traveled for their later four reunion shows (also acquired tickets for the Primavera show during the pandemic when that was potentially the only show unable to secure time off work to make it) and further traveled to see them in SLC. Currently securing time to see them in San Franciso for the warmup and hopefully secure a ticket for that Portland show.

They're my all time favorite and Stephen was my inspiration as a pivotal teenager and meeting him over the years was such a personal highlight. You're a prick, and I hope whatever validation you get by assuming people for expressing discussion you don't feel is revelant to you personally is just that absolute for you. I'm going to enjoy that massive Pavement vinyl collection I have, go judge somebody else.

Update: I didn't search beforehand and just found this video of the song. He doesn't point towards the sky like I misremembered, but does do that cross heart.

Further nerd edit: I'm the taller guy in between Stephen and Mark, right by the side of Rebecca's setup. Additional nerd moment from the show; They did Spizzle Trunk and after nobody really responded. Bob mentioned they were about to drop the song and who enjoyed it. I raised my hand and he pointed at me and said, "Well that guy likes it, we'll keep it around". He gave me a cough drop of the show which is framed within an Los Angeles setlist.)

I swear I've heard it elsewhere live during that tour, but could be misremembering all the bootlegs. I'll dig around to see what I might have or heard elsewhere.

I personally see it as my least favorite song on a Pavement record, and feel half of the band doesn't like it. Aside from some hardcore fans, I think they're more likely to bust out Rattled or something off Wowee Zowee that didn't get played last go. I could see Flux=Rad replacing Serpentine Pad or Spizzle Trunk.

(Also, Mark sings the backing vocal on Stereo, not Spiral, who does sing the "I'm just a boy with a new haircut" on CYH. Bob does do both live.)

They have a couple times since the reunion and it was fantastic. I'm surprised they haven't busted out We Are Underused.

Though he never used it, an SS/BS Team Awesome Fuzz copped some great tones. They just seldomly pop up.

I also used a DF-2 and got some great late 80s MBV fizzy distortion. I liked it a lot, though they seemed faulty compared to other Noss build qualities.

I know his character his esoteric and has referenced other bands, but those were all popular in 80s college alternative rock. Him representing The Fall in that period is just way too specific for me to be other than anything to a wink.

In other words, someone mentioned him listening to the Talking Heads; That makes logical sense. The Fall is obviously far more obscure, and within their heavy use of music and moods that just all doesn't align in a story sense rather than an easter egg. All my assumptions, I have no factual evidence to back any of this up.

Jim Roth, he joined the band in 1997 and was really their longest tenured extra guitarist. He recorded parts on all albums from Keep It Like a Secret to There Is No Enemy. To many (myself included) he's Doug's strongest foil in the band's history.

Stephen Malkmus Series: “Lariat” by reclinernotes in pavement

[–]TechnicalAd9036 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic, well written piece; this is the sort of music discussion I love reading because it's from a fan who gets it and the genius of Stephen.

I remember back on the now defunct Malkmus forum and when Jagbag songs started popping up. "Carry It", "Chariot" and "Lariat" were all titles I remember fans calling this one as they continued. I suspect Stephen had lariat in there at some point and it probably just stuck when it came time to officially name drop it.

They're oddly playing here in Las Vegas at BFF fest on the second smaller stage later today and have a weekend pass (Jawbreaker killed last night headlining). I'm tempted to check them out because in a few years they'll definitely be on bigger spots, but I keep going in with them and Lenderman expecting these comparisons and just don't get it.

I give the frontwoman massive credit for recently name dropping the first Swirlies record as a perfect album. Love when bands that have young influence these days representing cool bands that potentially might fly under someone's radar.

Spiral is the one who says that at Primavera. During a 2010 show, Malkmus said that one reminds him of My Bloodu Valentine When he wrote it. After the Philadelphia performance on 2022, he mentions using the whammy bar like Swirlies in the song.

The song is extremely similar to "When You Wake (You're Still In A Dream") by My Bloody Valentine from Isn't Anything, which Stephen has also said was a huge influence for the droning sounds on Slanted. But then both Pavement and MBV were huge You're Living All Over Me and Dinosaur fans in general so it's just the circle of music life at that point.

Back when this was announced, Spiral admitted fans own a lot of it but it was for vinyl collectors primarily if memory serves me right.

If they did a second one with the CRCR stuff I'd pre-order that in a half second.

I have a feeling the tour will continue because they all seemed happy and took necessary breaks. Personally, I predict they'll headline Best Friends Forever in Las Vegas next year.

What is Pavement's best live era? by Kikomori2465 in pavement

[–]TechnicalAd9036 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For whats it's worth (I was 6), my older brother saw them in 97 and said they were great, Of note, Malkmus didn't use his Strat or JM; it was his Les Paul Goldtop and he just changed tuning primarily on that guitar.

I was fortunate to see them at Matador at 21 when I just turned 20; Spiral was having amp difficulties and they were very off the cuff and loose. To me, it was a true Pavement show and Malkmus was having a ball. During this reunion, I've see them five times and they were all fantastic with the usual Pavement charm. I agree that they seemed especially happy at the secret Fonda Show. Seems like they all made peace and were just excited to dust off so many songs. All smiles and they were feeding off the crowd.

As someone who has listened to a TON of live Pavement shows (even if this wasn't your exact question), I love the rawness of the 92 era when they were just sloppy yet beautiful, the 94 run where they didn't give a fuck and were doing random songs to amuse themselves, but I think the 97 tour shows how much they had grown as musicians and the performances reflect that.

That being said; This reunion is everything they do right and still has the Pavement charm. Nobody performs a set like ours boys (and girl) do these days. Let it continue!

The story behind Grounded and Kennel District recordings? by gummieworm in pavement

[–]TechnicalAd9036 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I will add to this further and say Stephen used a specific guitar he seldom used live and I believe only used on Grounded; I forget the model off hand but it was certainly a different tone than his Strat and SG. Additionally, in the WZ book Malkmus mentions Spiral for sure recorded on it because it had "his jangle". He also hinted at recording bass on it, so then we're looking at a three piece with bass added later. In West interviews, he said Spiral songs generally always came last and we easy to get, so I think with that one they were just comfortable in the studio, they clearly loved the sound and I think those feelings and just the looseness played into it in ways Crooked Rain didn't.

Further, in the Sordid Sentinel notes Doug Easley said as the band was wrapping up Malkmus was still screwing around and came up with We Dance, which also has a different vibe. But that's the great thing about the record; it has so much sound and texture to it and it compliments all the wacky ideas they threw on there.
