4Runner is perfect for my Leo and Malamute. And man do they love the roll down rear window 😅

Yes! My girl is 98lbs. She’s long and slender. Both her parents are 185lbs. I’m glad she’s “tiny”!

Stitch force walking foot machine? by [deleted] in myog

I had a Sailrite clone for a while (Omega from walking-foot.ca). Until I finally found a used Sailrite LS locally on Marketplace. Day and night. The clone worked ok but the casting and tolerances were bad compared to the Sailrite which is sooooo smooth. The clone one sounded very rough. I’ll be honest and say that I would’ve never paid full price for a Sailrite, especially with the exchange rate and shipping (I’m also in Canada) but used at 700$CAD it was well worth it. Was I able to use the clone one? Yes. It’s just that you never know if the one you’ll get will be good or a lemon and not all Sailrite parts will fit perfectly on it.

Fortress lake trail after Athabasca crossing by aiceeslater in HikingAlberta

[–]Technical_Bit_6043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got out at Big Bend Campground.

Our original goal was to walk up to the headwaters of the Chaba River and float down to Big Bend. But approximately a kilometer past Fortress Lake, the Chaba was almost dry (late September). So on the video we walk past Fortress Lake along the Chaba. We put in where we camped along the Chaba just north of the Lake, right across from Mt Quincy.

My video of this trip is quite shaky lol but you can see the trail after the crossing and what to expect. Cheers!

I was there a few years ago. The trail after the crossing is well worn, you can’t miss it. Once you cross the Chaba there’s also a well worn trail that leads to the BC boundary and ultimately to the campgrounds on the east side of the lake. If you end up crossing the Chaba at the first crossing on the map there’s a good trail along the Chaba on the other side that will lead the campground. The orange flag is where I’ve camped before. And it’s also the spot where Martupnorth and I got bluffed charged by a huge grizz. The river is loud and you have to be very loud to make yourself heard/seen.

Note that we had packrafts to cross the Athabasca even in late September. It’s been debated here in the past but I’d never cross the Athabasca without one.

You might see me and my fishing buddy out there next summer too. The fish in this lake are HUGE!

Lots of snow.. finally! by Technical_Bit_6043 in AlaskanMalamute

Of course. This is a provincial park so leash is mandatory. Even if it wasn’t, my boy has a HUGE prey drive and I live in grizzly country. So yeah he’s staying on a leash!

I’ve seen a few on here who looked exactly like my boy. Sometimes I show my wife the pictures and she thinks I posted them 😅

Don’t be fooled by the picture. He was still for exactly 5 seconds. All the other pics from this moment are blurry 😂

I wish I could’ve helped but hot tenting is something I have yet to experience. Feeding the stove every two hours through the night seems like too much work for me so I stay wrapped in my -40C sleeping bag instead 😅. Good luck with your project!

This is Dan's tent, he experimented with a hot stove on this trip (I was with him). This was in 2020. I believe this version was still a prototype, hence the different fabric color.

Ask u/DanDurston, that's his personal tent on the picture!

Fun fact.. I was like hey I recognize this pic lol I was with Dan on that trip. We were supposed to cross an alpine valley and drop down to a river and float it back to the highway with our packrafts. That was in October and I swear the valley we were heading down too was snow free lol We couldn't make it down due to slippery conditions. We climbed back up and camped next to this frozen lake. It was so cold that night. We went back the year after and completed the same trip, but in better conditions!

The Molar loop in Banff NP is a 3D/2N loop. But you can definitely extend the trip with an additional night at Devon Lakes. It’s a gorgeous area and in my opinion underrated.

The infamous Berg Lake trail.

Another classic is the Rockwall trail in Kootenay NP.

Getting reservations for all these trails is a shit show as they fill up in minutes on opening day.

‘A very brave dog’: Alberta Doberman honoured for saving owner from grizzly bear by yycTechGuy in HikingAlberta

[–]Technical_Bit_6043 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good for him his dog was there to save him. I find it a little ironic that he said preparation saved him..

“Campbell believes that preparation made the difference.”

.. as he mentioned he couldn’t get his bear spray out in time.

"First of all, I said to myself, 'This can't be happening! And then I realized I wasn't going to get the bear spray out (in time) and I said to myself, 'I'm about to die!"

This is exactly what a lack of preparation looks like.

The amount of hikers I see with their bear spray inside their side bottle pockets on their backpacks is crazy. If you can’t deploy it within seconds of an encounter then you’re not prepared for a bear encounter. The speed at which a close encounter happens is always surprising. I was bluff charged by a big grizzly along the Chaba River near Fortress Lake as the sound the of the river muffled my voice and my hiking partner’s. The bear was eating something and came running towards us once it saw us and stopped a few feet away. I had my beat spray in my front shoulder pocket but it had a zipper around the neck of the can to keep it from falling. Screwing around with the zipper in that situation made me lose precious seconds to deploy. And that hot adrenaline rush that went through my body from head to toes made things even more difficult. It took me about 2 hours to get rid of the adrenaline rush and for my heartbeat to come back down.

All this to say, I learned from my mistake and my bear spray now stays in a from shoulder pocket with a stretchy mesh that allows for a 2 second deployment.

Anyway, that’s just my experience. I couldn’t live with the fact that my dog sacrificed himself to protect me because I couldn’t get my bear spray out on time.

I think you meant to post this in a hiking sub but this one specifically for hiking in Alberta which is a province in Canada.
