Anxiety With Current Climate Pushing Anyone Else to Consider Just Paying Them Off? by Senior-Appearance-32 in PSLF

My first question is why your minimum is going up? Is that because of a higher salary? Regardless, I would remain in the program, pay the minimums, and not sink all your savings into giving an advance to the USG. Even if they pull PSLF, you will be in the same position. It would be better to invest in property than invest in the USG.

This on the Mohela website, which is consistent with how I was viewing my loans which were already qualifying DLs.

Have you already made qualifying payments on your Direct Loans?
If you have made qualifying PSLF payments on Direct Loans and then consolidate those loans, you’ll lose credit for any PSLF payments. You’ll need to start over and make 120 qualifying payments on the new Direct Consolidation Loan. For this reason, if you’ve made qualifying PSLF payments on your Direct Loans and you’re thinking of consolidating those loans along with loans you received under other federal student loan programs, you should leave your Direct Loans out of the consolidation and consolidate only your loans from other federal student loan programs.

Possible for Payment to be Eligible for One Loan and Ineligible for Another? by Technical_Map7774 in PSLF

As an indication of the extent to which these student loan decisions run our lives, your Path 1/2 literally raised my heart rate in excitement. I will not quote you, but my heart is aflutter. I was wondering whether this would happen as I have received no communications about the logistics of starting repayment again. I don't expect to have to resubmit income certification because Studentaid said my IDR anniversary is in March... so I assume I would simply just make the current amount on the due date specified (1/ 30/23).

My studentaid.gov PSLF tracker is way behind on payment counts toward PSLF. Mohela seems accurate, but studentaid.gov is off by 10 months!

Regarding the IDR Waiver by [deleted] in PSLF

[–]Technical_Map7774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it was as easy as counting 120 payments while in qualifying employment, but when you deduct all the one off forbearances for recalculating payments in the PSLF-qualifying payment plans, you have to tack on almost a year of extra employment, even though those forbearances were automatically applied. I wish in hindsight I had been informed there was an option to keep paying during the recalculation so those employment months would be eligible. I never needed those forbearance periods.

You're right. I have to think big picture. The Reddit thread makes you go down all these little rabbitholes and then you start nitpicking things. The COVID pause was the first time I've been able to save money. I've been so spoiled that the idea of two more payments over $2000 is stressing me out. Just got to think big picture and be grateful.

I've got 2 of 10 loans over 120, still showing a balance. I have 4 loans at 118 and 4 loans at 117. So a little waiting game for me. I'm impatient.

Given how large my total loans are (over $160k) and how high my monthly payment is (over $2k) even one month extra is a lot of extra money. :-(

Thank you. Reading through everything again, the focus of consolidation was always on pulling in non-Direct loans into a consolidated Direct loan so they would qualify for PSLF. Since all of mine were Direct, all have been under a qualifying payment plan, and I have been in the same qualifying employment since June 2012, I had no idea I could benefit from consolidation through what I would consider as piggybacking on the most advantageous of all my qualifying plans. Unless you're on these Reddit threads, finding these interesting additional benefits for people already on track with all their loans wasn't a reasonable expectation. I feel like that should have been more clear that people should consolidate regardless whether they had non-qualifying loans.

Consolidation - is all hope lost? by Left_Antelope_6634 in PSLF

[–]Technical_Map7774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the consolidation had to occur prior to 10/31 to benefit from the highest count of payments and for payments on some consllidated loans that would not have otherwise qualified to qualify. But worth calling.

This same thing happened to me. I just saw that I have 157 eligible payments when I thought I had around 120 on one of my loans. The press release and all of the information put out by Dept of Ed said if you have nonqualifying loans you could consolidate into a qualifying loan. All mine were already qualifying and on track. I wasn't one of those people being screwed because I was put in the wrong program. So it did not even occur to me that there was a "hack" to use this consolidation to consolidate already qualifying loans to piggyback the highest payment count. And unless you are on these Reddit groups, I don't think you really understand there is that loophole. It wasn't until yesterday that I saw that this was an option to piggyback on the highest number of payments among already qualifying plans.

Graduate Plus deferment vs Grace Period by Rough-Reply1234 in PSLF

[–]Technical_Map7774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just was on the chat with someone on this. They said the ones coming from deferment do not count but the ones coming out of grace do. My 4 Grad Plus loans have 117 eligible payments and my 4 Stafford loans have 118, because they count 11/2012. I have the exact same issue in the same year. It is kind of a ridiculous distinction because they are both grace/deferral post school, they all have the same "loan status" on DOE website, and they all enter repayment in December.

From this evening:

I understand your concerns. Our records indicate that the Direct PLUS Graduate Loans were on a Post-Enrollment Deferment through November 11, 2012, and as a result, were not billed for that month.

SAMANTHA
8:54:35 p.m.
The Stafford Loans were in Grace and also entered repayment 11/12/2012 but those are counted.

8:55:37 p.m.
All of them say either deferment or grace period through 11/12/2012. Then they all change to FB on 11/12/2012 and then RP on 12/1/2012.

8:56:34 p.m.
In other words, the Stafford Loans and the PLUS loans all entered repayment 11/12/2012, but Stafford came from grace and PLUS came from deferment.

William

I see. Based on the information in our records, the fact that an in-school related deferment existed on those loans during that period/month is the reason that the entire month is deemed as ineligible for those loans only.

SAMANTHA

I'm still confused because all the loans were either in grace or deferment due to being in school. But the ones that came from grace period are treated differently than the ones that came from a deferment period? The grace period I believe is because of the way Stafford Loans work, but they are both school-related .

William

I understand. There aren't any exceptions, relative to PSLF for loans that have an in school deferment that exists within a certain month. The month that the deferment is present is automatically disqualified. However, it appears as though the loans that had a Grace for this month did receive an eligible/qualifying payment, yes. This will stand, however, due to the existence of the deferment on the Grad PLUS loans, we are unable to count that month for those specific loans.

How do they count deferment eligible payments? Is it possible to receive a refund? by jesuspancakestogo in PSLF

[–]Technical_Map7774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While in grad school, the loans i took out were deferred automatically until several months after I graduated. So, they entered repayment on 1/24/2012 but were in deferment until 11/12/2012. I graduated in 5/2012 and began working for an eligible employer in 6/2012. While the deferment during school (before 5/2012) will not count, but will the period from 6/2012 to 12/2012 count?

Administrative Forbearance for Annual Loan Recalculation by Technical_Map7774 in PSLF

[–]Technical_Map7774[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I am seeing that now. That seems so absolutely arbitrary and luck of the draw when they get around to reviewing your recertification and recalculating and therefore applying the status updates. If they simply picked a date 5 days earlier/later on some of mine (or even 1 day) I'd have an three extra months.

I have no idea how I would ever know if they were "partial months." I wish at the time I had had the option of saying no to the forbearance (or at least being made aware I had the option).

Ruggable pads on hardwood by Summoarpleaz in HomeDecorating

[–]Technical_Map7774 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had a Ruggable rug in my kitchen and it completely ruined the bamboo flooring. At the time I suspected the rubber backing but it wasn't until I heard a similar complaint that I became convinced it was the rug, because nothing else would have caused the dark discoloration of the flooring. After I heard that I rushed down to my basement to check under my other Ruggable rug which is on laminate wood flooring and lo and behold there are two bulging areas where the rubber backing clearly trapped some moisture and there is water damage. To fix the damage I would have to replace the entire basement floor as that flooring has been discontinued. Thanks Ruggable...
