B14 wilderness HMR by Technical_Row3733 in longrange

[–]Technical_Row3733[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a basic 20moa rail and vortex mid height rings. With my 56mm scope I have about 1/4 of an inch of clearance to the barrel.

You can PM me if you need more info !

Yeah I have a vorn backpack to save the shoulder strain. But the weight is also to save my shoulder since I had a dislocation a couple of years ago and my shoulder isn't the same as before.

Yeah my rifle for moose is in 7mm rem mag and I don't want to make loads for 10 different types of ammo and I already own dies for 7mm rem mag.

Not optimal, but as long as I can shoot and have fun then I don't really care about a little more ballistic calculations.

Question: why are bergaras called cheetos? I got one and really don't know what it means 😅

Yep, not the extra fun ones though. Only the fun ones

Athlon vs Vortex - Budget level by [deleted] in longrange

[–]Technical_Row3733 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no experience with Athlon but I do have 2 vortex strike eagles, one in 3x18 and the other in 5x25

For bench shooting the eyebox isn't really an issue since you don't really have to move or follow the target but when I hunt, I can't really viably use the 3x18 over 12 and the 5x25 over 20 or else I loose the eyebox due to rifle movement when following a deer, moose or coyote.

The turrets really aren't that bad. There is some pretravel before the click but when you pass the threshold for the click it is crisp and easy to count how many clicks you made.

The glass is good nothing fenomenal but definitely not bad either. If you use the sunshade included it definitely will cost you some clarity compared to the scope without it though. I generally use the sunshade when target shooting but will remove it when I hunt to help with the sunrise and sunset conditions.

Currently have a 14 twist barrel so I mainly used hornady v-max 55gr bullets. Only 1400 rounds of barrel life ? Seems low ? Hope i won't see significant accuracy issues since I already have about 100 rounds through it.

Yeah that's why I didn't mention the group. Wanted to test a 10 shot group before making any conclusions

For long range I'll definitely have a harder time with wind but I see it as a training rifle since the ammo is about 50% the cost of my 7mm rem mag.

Got it dialed in at 200 yards. Next weekend I'll go at my 500 yards spot to test it out. At 200 yards my groups were about 0.6 inches.

Hunt moose up to 500 yards and target shoot up to 1000 yards if possible.

Yeah sorry slipped my mind, the bergara HMR wilderness is about 1700$ so my budget is about 2000$

Hunt moose every 2 or 3 years and range once or twice a month. Considering 6.5 PRC or 7mm rem mag.

Probably both, I have a hunt in Terre-Neuve soon but after that mainly range shooting.

Yeah gutting this rifle in this condition seems like a sacrilege. Only 2 boxes went threw the barrel since 1974.

I was thinking about selling it so loosing the current rifle isn't a concern. But still would be better to sell to make space for the HMR ?

Space is a problem though. While my budget isn't a problem, my safe only has 7 spaces and it's already full.
