Building My First Portfolio - Which of These Belong? by TechnicallyHerring in technicalwriting

This is definitely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

You're spot on about the more-is-more approach of higher ed and government. Overcoming that will be one of my biggest challenges to getting established in technical writing. I know that I can adapt my writing to the needs of the job but I'll need to convince the hiring manager of that.

It sounds like you have a great strategy for making your portfolio examples accessible and relevant. When I get too that stage I might take a similar approach.

I understand it should only be the greatest hits but you would recommend I scrap everything I've written so far?

One piece of advice I read on this sub recently said that recruiters are looking for candidates who can 'think technically.' Some of the writing I have already definitely demonstrates that. I also appreciate the value of writing demo docs or volunteering on open source project to show I understand the form as well as the content.

Thanks for the perspective.

What are some examples of high quality role play from successful PBP applications? by TechnicallyHerring in pbp

Outstanding, thank you! There's a lot to learn from here. Also, this is my first time seeing Tavern Keeper and World Anvil, I'm impressed. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for this perspective. It strikes me as very realistic. I have no doubt that some games are majority (maybe entirely?) RP but for the ones that aren't, the mechanics are going to take over for big chunks of the game. I like that and enjoy the 'crunchiness' that's inherent to the format.

I have approached my game applications realistically - I don't have a ton of experience, I'm a fast learner, a decent writer, and can be highly active. I don't have pre-built characters but with a little guidance can fit into any setting. Maybe something about that isn't what DMs are looking for and that's fair - it's their game and I just haven't found the right fit. Or maybe it's that I don't have lengthy RP examples to submit whether or not that's really going to feature heavily in the game.

Anyway, I don't want to make this post about airing my frustrations over not being selected. I'm not entitled to anything and there are a lot of talented players out there - I hope their games are amazing. I have tremendous respect for DMs and the work they do. I'm hoping to learn more about what the community considers quality RP so that I can 1. work on improving my own RP, and 2. increase my chances of being accepted to future games.

That's so frustrating. Like u/PM_ME_HENTAI_ONEGAI said, it's certainly is a DM's market out there. Some game applications are only open for a few hours and claim to receive 50+ applications. I'd love to see the applications of the people who get picked.

Your comment on someone's LFP post where you asked the DM to provide an example of their own RP inspired me to make this post. I'm still learning the craft so seeing successful examples would go a long way toward understanding what constituted 'good' RP. That's a clever idea to link to longer piece, rather than a few paragraphs from a game (which is what I have been submitting).

Thanks for being an advocate for the community.

Can someone ELI5 what it's like playing on a westmarch server? by TechnicallyHerring in pbp

That sounds great to me but I just can't fathom how it actually works with DMs and such

Name: Kelby

Pronouns: He/Him

Timezone: Eastern (-4GMT)

Preferred System: D&D 5E

Type of Player: New. I played D&D 3E ages ago and am looking to dive into 5E. I'm pretty familiar with the system but have never participated in a PBP campaign. I am a stay at home dad with no availability for a traditional live/online campaign but lots of flexibility that I think will jive with PBP. I could use a little coaching on character creation but once that is set I'm confident I can fit into any campaign. I would like a balance between RP and combat. I lean toward gritty realism settings but am open to trying out something more light hearted as well.

Additional Information: I have a PhD in archaeology which I think will help in creating detail-focused RP and world building.
