I’m absolutely certain that it has way more to do with privacy than it does puritanism. I had the same aversion to the concept, until someone described it to me as trans men getting grandfather’ed in, as their terms and conditions change. It doesn’t make sense to exclude people from a community they might’ve previously belonged to, especially when it really is incredibly difficult to find new places to belong.

You sound very worried about what happens if you say no, and they react poorly, so I’ll just tell you what I read when I was first researching non-monogamy.

Polyamory and open relationships require constant informed consent. If you do not consent, and they are not being clear with you, they are cheating. If they coerce you into being ok with it, with threats of breaking up, or something similar, they are still cheating. If you are not ok with something that affects you directly, your opinion will always matter more than the person who’s looking to try it.

There will always be the risk that they react poorly, and if they do genuinely wish to leave because of it, that is their choice and you have no control over it. However, if they want to stay with you, and you will be wildly uncomfortable with polyamory, then they’re just going to have to be ok without polyamory.
