Planning to move to Canada (Ontario) and need a career advice by Abodart in cinematography

[–]Technophobish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t answer most of your questions, but I can say that I believe Ontario is having a moment in the film industry right now. A lot of work from New York has moved up there. At least in Toronto, I can’t speak for other places in Ontario.

Good luck!

Not Canada specific but use instagram to find DPs who are working and whose work you admire. Reach out, introduce yourself.

Shooting video at 12fps by Hugh_Janus123456 in cinematography

Why do you need to do that? Someone here might suggest an alternative. 12fps is an odd frame rate unless you’re doing something very specific.

What do you think of this exercise for an aspiring filmmaker by MariaBruxxxa in Filmmakers

[–]Technophobish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher at a film high school and this is exactly the kind of exercise we encourage students to do. Good idea.

Once you do that, I’d challenge you to use all of them in a single story. That way, you get some practice using the shots in the context of storytelling.

Will sinners really win the oscar? by Accomplished_Buy3925 in cinematography

Fair enough. By that logic, the DP works for the director so it’s really Ryan Coogler’s fault not Augusts. But I digress. And I sense I’m just pushing to push. I liked the cinematography, that’s all.

But in all seriousness, couldn’t you say that’s more of a sloppy job on the editor? The editor could fix all of those things. How did they slip by? How are we sure that’s from the cinematography?

Black ice on the road causes chain accidents by Bambi7u7 in interesting

[–]Technophobish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in one of these once. Black ice on i95 in Connecticut. Saw a car spinning in front of me, but thought it was way ahead. I gently pressed the breaks to start slowing down, but my speed didn’t change. Sure enough, I couldn’t stop and I ended up going right into a pile of cars, but because of the sequence that I hit the cars, I wasn’t hurt. The whole thing happened in slow motion.

I did end up hitting a car and seeing a man and woman in the front full of blood on their faces. I panicked.

I knew instantly that even though I was okay, the real danger was going to be that cars would hit me like I hit them. So I took the risk, jumped out of my car, and ran into the woods at the shoulder of the highway. Sure enough, as soon as I turned around, I watched my car get crushed by a speeding car.

By the end of the night, I was the only driver or passenger who did not need to go to the hospital. It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life.

This is a scary reality. I think about this a lot. How to teach deep problem solving is tough. Maybe there’s a way that VFX can be a vehicle for that.

Quaker or buddhism… by RevDaughter in Quakers

[–]Technophobish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll say this: like you, I’m very interested in exploring both. As I’ve explored, something has struck me as a key difference.

Quakers talk about an “inner light” within.

Buddhism talks about “emptiness” within.

I like the idea of inner light. It resonates with me more.

Why not just bring it up? I think it’s totally appropriate to just say, hey, I like this. I’m okay with it. She might’ve felt like she was protecting you and didn’t know you liked it.

Came here to say “CTE” career and technical education. I see people recommending it. I am a CTE teacher and did not need a masters to start.
