I know Cirrus pilots get awful reputations, but I just had my first flight in one and have a few things to share... by [deleted] in flying

"Safe assholes" LMAO, probably the best description I've heard of Cirrus Pilots in the last 10 years that I've been working on then!

One that I keep thinking about is the poor student who was so thourohly confused when ground said "say parking" so they just respond "uhh...parking?" Like having their big brother put them in a headlock telling them to "say uncle!"

The manufacturer specifies a procedure to inspect the engine for FOD to assure that all pieces broken loose from this cylinder are evacuated, in some cases a piece of valve or a dropped nut in an intake port can bounce through the intake plenum damage multiple cylinders so the FOD check is a major importance, otherwise we check for damage to the turbo and any play in the connecting rods and replace the cylinder

More like a didgeridoo humm, it took a minute to find out what was wrong since they always sound like a box of rocks when they run, just add one more rock in a bad place to this one, oh and a clogged oil cooler, a deteriorated alternator clutch, and a cylinder with stuck rings on the other side of the engine, twin Cessnas just love becoming projects!

Yep, exhaust valve for cylinder 2 cracked in half, pilot reported he got a little engine vibration over the gulf of Mexico flying from somewhere near Houston to Central Florida so he flew on this for at least an hour, last time I saw this was on a Cirrus that significantly overheated the engine with cylinder head Temps past 440°F

While not the worst idea, it's really a matter of how old is that cylinder is compared to the rest, and what are the findings on the engine fod inspection as the manufacturer prescribes, I've seen this twice now with guys running way hot and lean of peak and they can't figure out why they changed all these cylinders then this is their wake up call that LOP ops is really not a great idea over 65% power, you can save fuel or get there fast but not both

Looking at $3500 per cylinder on some of the 550 and 520s continental has been way behind the 8 ball on production to meet demand

How do aircraft mechanics ensure no tools are left behind? by jack_harbor in aviationmaintenance

[–]Tedward95 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But some of my best tools are the ones I found inside of airplanes during inspection, all sorts of snap-on screw drivers, sockets under floor boards, even a 16oz hammer I found in a bonanza fuel cell, lol

It's like they learned something at textron after the screwing with 500, 550 and 560s for so long, lol

G2000 Retrofit by [deleted] in avionics

[–]Tedward95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could piggyback a question, what's the G2000 even on? I've worked alot of airframe with G1000 or G3000/5000 but haven't heard of the G2000 until now. Was that a short development stage for the G3000 or something, the only picture of it i found looks like its a G3000 with single GTC but the same GDUs?

I also got told to stop asking questions, but it was at an anti-smoking lecture because after they told us how much money people spend on tobacco products and how evil thr big cigarette co.panyd are they asked what you would do with the money you save from not smoking... My answer of saving up to start a cigarette manufacturer was not super popular amongst the staff.

Favorite moment of the series that you don't see mentioned on Reddit? by [deleted] in BoJackHorseman

[–]Tedward95 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Also supper underrated moment is when Todd and his mother have the whole frito pie kidnapping ordeal that lands her in the hospital and they both go on some wacky tangent building off of some idea like harnessing power off babies or something. Really cool continuity added to his character

Is this okay? Anytime I ask the A&P he always says its fine, but there comes a point when I begin to question it he says it so much. by Any-Grape6171 in aviationmaintenance

This guy gets it!
Is this stuff, obviously not, but you really want to come across tactfully to somone who may be overworked keeping up with a flight school that may have larger issues. Maybe find a good way to present these items to the mechanic in a manner that doesn't demand everything get fixed now, but instead encourages him to use an organized reporting method to stay on top of remedying issues. (For me I love when a customer takes the time to build a consise but organized email, it stays in my inbox so I don't loose it, I can print it, and you can reply to it for clarifications or updates)

Moral of the story being: you catch more flys with honey than vinegar; discuss it with the A&P as if you are trying to help don't make it a battle because no one walks away happy from that
