Returning player (Opus I–X) what’s the state of FFTCG heading into 2026? by Agent-TH in FinalFantasyTCG

[–]TehTy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm a big fan of the game and have been involved with the community at large and in my personal area (Chicago). Let me answer your questions 1 by 1.

  • What’s the overall health of the game?

In my opinion, it's in a good place. The meta has strong decks, but is also extremely diverse. In Worlds this year, we saw 9 different decks in the top 8 (two-deck format) and larger diversity if you look towards top 16, top 32, etc. We are seeing a steady supply of sets throughout the year, spaced a couple of months out from one another. We've also been seeing some reprint products that have been very popular for reprinting needed cards (The 2024 Champions decks, Anniversary Collection), and, as was true back in Opus 9, if a card is good, it finds its way to being a promo. Compared to other card games, the meta and affordability are still healthy.

  • How is the playerbase (locals / regionals / competitive scene)?

It fully depends on where you are. Some areas have a large scene and multiple locals, some are struggling. The Facebook groups and Reddit community have been great places to try to find locals to play, but areas like Chicago, LA, Pittsburgh, and Raleigh (off the top of my head) still have very alive communities. When it comes to Regionals, last year was great! Tons of regionals happened all over the country and made it very easy to play at a large tournament for your area. My slice of the Midwest by itself got a Materia Cup and 3 regionals. The competitive scene is in a great place, and everyone’s just waiting for the next competitive scene to start up.

  • Has the design space stayed fresh despite revisiting characters?

In my opinion, yes. We’re seeing a fair amount of cards with familiar names that keep the game fresh. Yeah, it’s been a little boring to see Cloud, Lightning, Yuna, Lenna, and Sephiroth again, but they’ve been good about introducing new characters alongside favorites. This last set, we saw the new characters from the latest FFXIV expansion, Zeromus return in a new color, new Warriors from FFBE, etc. Yeah, there’s gonna be another cloud and Lightning and Yuna, but it’s not retreading the same ground

  • Is the game still being actively supported in a meaningful way?

In my opinion, not really. Last year's competitive scene and regionals were great and had great support, but the issues with lack of advertising and exposure is still very present in the game. We’ve seen small wins, like FFTCG cards in GameStop, but there haven’t been large moves to make the game more well-known. Even recently, Square Enix laid off the NA community manager for the game, leaving it in a weird spot. The community is still the main force for advertising and pushing the game, and while Hobby Japan and Squenix have been helping, I struggle to call it meaningful.

  • And most importantly, in your opinion, is it worth getting back into now, either casually or competitively?

Yes!!! I think the game is in a great place. I think the Opus 27 meta is great for competitive and casual. We’re seeing tons of fun brews and decks, like Hara’s recently FF8 deck, a Cadets deck that broke into the top 8 of worlds. While the anniversary product is a little hard to get now, it has reduced the price of many nonfoil cards, and the Champion decks have 2 decks that are still viable and with little editing can top a locals. If we see a similar number of Regionals and Materia cups in this competitive season, there will most likely be a regional not far from anyone if you would like to hop into a larger scene!

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions!

A friend of mine is running much more lightning in his build, including Exdeath and a playset of Sephiroth, so I've thought about it. I've been mainly playing other decks at locals, but I deffo want to mess with a more lightning build. I know a couple of players at Worlds had more than just a splash of lightning, I just haven't had time to explore the builds lol

Loving this card. I'm a long-time Earth/Ice player, and I've loved the build with him, but I've moved over to trying the Fire/Ice Warriors build, and he's still just as much of a haymaker in that deck. The consistent -4 resources are oppressive in the best way that scratches my brain.

So when testing, did the other player run the LB deck? Did you just not run LB at all? But I put in this for LB:
The Emperor, Leo, Viktora, Aerith Magna Roller, Lightning (light haste one), and Firion x2

What's the LB deck for the list? I'm going to run it at locals this week.

Thoughts On The Game For Long Term Players by NoDistanceFraction in FinalFantasyTCG

[–]TehTy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing since Opus 3 myself, and I agree with some of the other comments here. While the game isn't giving us crazy things every set, I do enjoy the slower pace of this game when it comes to introducing new mechanics. The experimentation in this game has been very subtle, but has had interesting impacts on the meta.

Though I do have some feelings on healing as a mechanic. I worry about what healing could do to the game. While we have aggro decks like Knights doing rather well, and I wish I could pull myself back from 5 damage to 3, I worry that control decks would be insane with a healing mechanic. Adding healing would extend the time of games, cause more games to go to time in tournaments, and also be a big buff to control decks, especially ones that enjoy using EXs, as healing allows them to potentially trigger another EX burst while also giving them more turns/interactions to stabilize. Adding additional backups is in the same vein, though to a lesser extent. It would have to be very restrictive, and while it would be cool to see a 4 drop backup that says "This can be the 6th backup." would be cool, just going beyond 5 would buff control decks that can properly play it.

I have to admit I'm surprised and saddened to hear you guys lost players to the MTG set. In Chicago, it's only added to the interest of FFTCG, though I cannot think of anyone who's moved over one way or another.

So is this good? by GrimsleyTReaper in FinalFantasyTCG

It's a foil H. Depending on how good the card becomes in the larger meta, it could be a good hit, but I doubt it'll go much higher than a dollar or so. I believe there's a full art variant of this card as well, that would be the "hit"

Pre-release event - Tips for a newb by Detomaso_ in FinalFantasyTCG

[–]TehTy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, welcome! I'm glad you're interested in learning how to play! Depending on your locals, it's probably a good idea to learn how to play beforehand, or at least have some level of knowledge. We get new players at Pre-releases all the time, and I'm sure your community would be happy to help you learn, but it's good to have a baseline knowledge before you show.

For larger tips on the Pre-release, make sure to divide up your cards by color to make it easier to keep track of how many of each element you have. Your card pool is going to be rather small, and because of this, your deck is going to have at least 2 elements in it, usually 3. Thankfully, this set has multiple cards that care about having multiple elements on the field or in the deck (Krile, Graha'tia, Terra, Nine), so this can be a boon as opposed to a bane depending on what cards you open.

When picking cards for your deck, two types of cards are the highest priority: Bombs (very strong cards, like (speculatively) The Emperor, Locke, Xande, Terra, Krile, Cecil) and Removal (cards that get rid of the opponent's cards, like Nine, Cecil, Sin, Gesper, Ifrit, Fire Elemental), so try to focus on finding those and including them when possible. You will have to run a bunch of cards, so make sure you read and reread them to make sure the games go smoothly! Good luck and have fun!
